Hi guys,
I am a Canadian applicant and I have submitted everything, my GPA is calculated, and just waiting for one LOR to be sent.

I am somewhat non traditional applicant..
I finished my first undergraduate degree with GPA of 2.16... (I know....)
And have started another degree at another University, graduating this summer with
GPA of 3.85. With this new degree, I have re- taken all of the pre-req's.
DAT
RC:20
BIO:20
CHM:21
Sci Total:21
AA:20
PAT:22

I have 1000+ shadowing hours, since I have been shadowing/volunteering for 4years, and LOR are from profs who I have done researches for.

You guys can be honest... what are my chances..?

Combining both your degrees, what's your new oGPA and sGPA?

What schools are you planning on applying to and what is your combined gpa for both science and overall?

I am applying to Boston, Case Western, Pitt, Penn, NYU, Temple, Detroit Mercy, Buffalo, Pacific, Southern California and Loma Linda.

That is the thing, my overall GPA is under 3.0..
oGPA: 2.81, sGPA:2.67

I have emailed NYU and they said they will look at the application as a whole, not just averaged GPA.. but thats what they always say right? ...TT

oGPA: 2.81, sGPA:2.67

I originally completed UG with a 2.3. Psych major, but I was required to take numerous science classes, which effed my sGPA years before I even knew I wanted to dentistry. I did a 2-yr post-bacc (UG pre-reqs) with a 3.9, leaving my oGPA at 2.9 and sGPA at 3.2. What sealed the deal for me was a 23 DAT.

If your second degree was a science one consisting only of science coursework, then I think your upward trend will pay dividends. Others may disagree, but I think your oGPA won't hold you back. However, the sGPA is a different story. I'm curious why your 3.85 GPA was only able to lift your sGPA to a 2.67. A great trend + a great DAT can overcome a sub-3.00 GPA, but I think a 2.67 is pushing it.

I'll tell you this: during all of my interviews, I asked my interviewers why they brought me in given my poor GPA. By and large, the answer was that they appreciated the 3.9 over two years, but they also said it wouldn't have been enough had I not also scored in the 99th percentile on the DAT. At the same time, they also said my DAT by itself also wouldn't have gotten me anywhere.

Where does that leave you? Well, your 20 DAT would be fine for the average applicant, but you are not that. It may just not be strong enough. I think you're going to have to aim for a 22. You might also want to put in another year taking upper-div science classes before looking into SMPs. Unless you own the DAT, I think you're about 2 years away. The good news is that you've shown you're capable, you just have to put in some more time to bump those numbers a tad higher.
