I have 3.5 in science and 3.02overall GPA 60 hours volunteering, no shadowing(will start shadowing next month), about to take MCAT in June and want to apply for DO school 2015-2016 application. What are my chances?

Without MCAT and your full list of extracurriculars, it's impossible to know your chances. And do note that 3.2/3.1 GPAs are a bit low, and you would realistically need to have 30+ MCAT to make up for the low GPAs. Alternatively, you should retake courses to boost your GPAs.

Your extra curricular are pretty low, but it's a good start. By 2016, you should be able to raise them hopefully up to 200 or 300. Rock the new MCAT and try to retake done classes if possible. Also never under estimate the effectiveness of applying early and broadly.

I would definitely recommend re-taking any C/D/F courses and apply 2016-2017 app cycle in order to boost your GPAs and gain shadowing/clinical experience.

Hi all,

I wanted to put my situation out there and get some insight int what you think my chances are?

I ended up finishing my Bachelors in Biological Anthropology at GWU with a 2.88UGPA, and a 2.3SGPA (Realistically I only had 3 science classes, so my SGPA at that point wasn't indicative of my capacity as a whole.) Despite my low GPA, I managed to gain acceptance to the top Forensic Science Masters program in the nation. I knew if I wanted to ever consider Med School (I want to be a Medical Examiner) I'd have to do exceedingly well. I did well enough in the first semester to be awarded a Graduate Peer Tutor position, and GTA stipend. I tutored and mentored for two semesters, and ended up graduating with a 3.7GPA. I am currently completing a POST BACC at UNE while simultaneously working 40+hrs a week, and currently hold a 3.5 Post BACC SGPA with one class left -- I am expecting an A-, which would raise me to around a 3.55SGPA. My MCAT score is a 29.

I'd really appreciate some input on what you think my chances are for both MD and DO, and which schools should I focus on for both?

Summary:

2.88 UGPA (BS Biological Anthropology from GW)
2.3 SGPA (Not many Science Classes)
3.7 Master of Science GPA (MS in Forensic Science from the top FS school in the nation)
3.55 Post Bacc GPA while working 40+ hrs (currently working)
3 month internship w/ the CT Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (Shadowed Autopsy MD)
Graduate TA/Tutor w/ stipend
URM

Thanks in advance!

Best,
Karla

I recounted my science GPA with school calculator it's 3.5 but my overall gpa is 3.02.

Make sure you only include courses that are biology, chemistry, or physics. Calculus and statistics are not part of sGPA for AACOMAS calculation. With a 3.5 sGPA, you will be in a better shape than before but still a bit shaky because of the low cGPA. Do you have any courses with C/D/F grades? If so, retake them to boost your GPAs. Also, pick up some DO shadowing and DO LORs and continue with any community service/volunteering activities you are doing.

If I retake the classes are they going to replace my previous grade with the new grade when they count the gpa?

Yes, given the courses are equivalent. For example, organic chem II could be replaced by an equivalent course, even if taken at a different school. Look into the grade replacement policy on AACOM for more details.

People.. there is a WHAT ARE MY CHANCES forum you guys should be posting in and then label it with the DO tag instead of MD...

Not good with that cGPA. Did you have at least a rising trend?
Yes I do have a rising trend. Do you know if need to finish retaking my classes before I fill out my primary?
