So, I'm a complicated nontraditional who wants to go to med school. I didn't start off wanting to be in medicine and so wasn't very disciplined in academics. But, I ended up becoming an EMT and working in a trauma center...and I just loved the learning and teamwork. And my love and appreciation of medicine kinda just grew organically from there . I ended up getting a nursing degree, and have worked in the ER and in Critical Care ever since (6 yrs total) I've taught myself as much as I can, I know that I need to go to medical school to learn more so I started back taking the science classes that I still need to get in. What are my chances given the rocky academic past a decade ago? Or, what percentile will I need to be in on the MCAT to have a realistic shot?(Stats, Gpa 3.3 cumulative...although it was really low once, Science gpa 3.85 with just biochemistry left to take). Thanks to all in advance for their honest advice!

Upward trend and experiences are good. Are you looking at both DO and MD?

Yes! I still need to find an osteopath to shadow though, because there aren't many DOs at my hospital

I'd say >90th percentile for MD. Not sure exactly for DO but around >70th percentile? I think you have a fine chance if you get that.

Thanks! The sheer amount of material for the new MCAT still indimidates me, but the 75th percentile seems makeable, giveN that back when I took the SAT I was in the 98th. Appreciate the advice, I had felt the despair creeping in a little...

Just be aware the MCAT is a whole different beast compared to the SAT. You are compared to a smaller group of students of a much higher caliber on average.
