If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. I have the doctors I work with tell me I would be a great physician but I know my early gpa holds me back.

Year in school: Graduated 2015 BS in Biochem
Country/state of residence: CA
Schools to which you are applying: TBD.
Cumulative GPA: 3.13 unfortunately but with upward trend.
Science GPA: 3.31 AMCAS, 3.24 AACOMAS
MCAT Scores: 500 , retake TBD. I thought I could handle working and mcat study at the same time

Research: 600 hrs in Organic synthesis lab during undergrad. 3 poster presentations.

Volunteering (clinical): 250 hrs rotating through various department including telemetry, ICU/CCU and ED and wound care. rotations took 3 months in each department with 4-6 hrs/week.

Physician shadowing: 500hrs in EM, 50hrs IM. this occurred during a 8 month span.

Non-clinical volunteering: ~650 hrs during a 4 semester span doing STEM outreach in underserved communities performing science fair judging, science experiment demos. this would encompass about 15 hrs a week.

Extracurricular activities: amateur triathlete for the past 5 yrs, guitar player for 10 yrs

Employment history: STEM tutor during undergrad. full time EMT since graduation working in a level 2 trauma hospital as an ER tech, full time status for the past 2.5 yrs.

Immediate family members in medicine? (y/n): No.

Specialty of interest: EM, ortho/sports med

Graduate degrees: None but thinking a masters degree since my cgpa is low.

Interest in rural health (y/n): Maybe.

I think your chance at MD schools are low, what is the breakdown for your GPA each year?
I think you would be okay for DO, hopefully you have significantly improved your MCAT the second time around. Are you looking to apply this cycle or is open to post-bac or SMP programs?

It’s hard to guess without your MCAT retake. Currently your stats are very low for MD but you might be okay for DO, but DO gets more competitive every year. You’ve been out of school for almost 3 years. Have you thought about taking some upper level science classes to see how you do? If you do well (As) a school might feel better about giving you an II. A Masters won’t help for MD school but it will for DO.

First year is about 2.5 and then junior and senior years about 3.6-3.7. My first year I really screwed up and I have classes that I took in high school at a community college for fun. Probably not the most brilliant idea to do. But I didn’t know any better.

I think the upward trend is definitely good. Apply wide
