Greetings to all and thank you for reading this email.
My question is regarding acceptance to a DO program and more specifically to LECOM in Bradenton, FL.

My undergrad is in Nursing. I will graduate in December 2005 with a BSN in nursing from Florida State University.

My pre-reqs are as follows:

Biology I - A
Biology II - A
Chemistry I - A
Chemistry II- C
Physics I - B
Physics II - Have not taken yet
Organic I - have not taken yet
Organic II- have not taken yet
Behavioral Sciences :
Sociology - A
Psychology - A

My total GPA is 3.4. When I graduate it should be closer to 3.50 which is not bad.
I haven't take the MCATs yet, but hope to do well since I will be dedicating a lot of time for preparation.
I have been working as a nurse for two years now.
Don't have a lot of volunteer time at all or honor societies or community work.
How does the admission board look at healthcare experience like nursing?

Does any have experience with interview with LECOM. I would apreciate any input.

I think you are too far away from the finish line to be asking "what are my chances" and a pre-med forum probably isn't going to give you the best idea of it anyhow.

Nurses and doctors fill significantly different roles in the healthcare field. If you want tthe role a nurse plays, stick with your field. If you will never be content with being a nurse because you would rather be a doctor, then take the extra classes study for the MCAT and give it a shot.

If you get A's and B's in the rest of your pre-recs and do well on the MCAT, your chances are good. If you can just barely pass both levels of Organic with a C- and get a 20 on the MCAT, then your chances are not soo good.

About LECOM Bradenton, try doing a search on here, most of this stuff has been talked about before many times. The only 'catch' that I would worry about with a new school is the lack of full accreditation and wether or not the 'kinks' have all been worked out. Overall, I have heard good things about the school and the students I know of seem to be happy.

I am not content with being a nurse for the simple fact that I always wanted to become a doctor but things got in the way and could not continue my education. Now that I have taken care of things and have everything in line I can go back and continue to pursue my goals.

I am a nurse and I will begin TUCOM this August! Do not worry about volunteer hours - your experience as a nurse is more than sufficient. Talk to some doctors (preferably DO) and get some great LOR's. Do spend the time to keep your GPA above average - I don't think one C is the worst news. I would wait to take the MCAT until you have finished all the pre-reqs - I did not and my score suffered. If you want to be a doctor than go for it - avoid the threads that demeanor your contributions as a nurse and compare nurses and doctors - they are a waste of time (much like the DO v MD threads). I waited longer than I should have to pursue medical school - good for you that you are doing it now instead of waiting many years and burning out - now you can burn out as a doctor 😀

Having 1 C won't be a problem. I got C on O chem II. Do well on your MCAT, and DO school will welcome you any time.

Thank you again for your help. I am thinking of taking the MCAT this August, but have not taken Organic yet. Somebody was telling me it would be suicide, but if I wait to take them next year this will delay everything by one year. What was your experience with the MCAT.
