I posted this in the pre-dent forum as well. I'd welcome any comments from those already through the application process.

Basically, I have two questions, any advice/comments would be most appreciated.

First, a bit about myself......

After graduating with a degree in Biology in 1999, I have worked in biotech in both Seattle and San Diego for the past 5 years. My initial intent in college had been to enter medical school, and, in fact, I was accepted to several schools, and enrolled at the University of Washington SOM. However, after much thought and deliberation, as well as conversations with family friends who were physicians, I decided to revoke my acceptance during the summer before school was to begin. I had struggled with this decision while I was applying, as I had heard the same sad stories from disgruntled docs and nearly all of them at one point or another told me "not to go into medicine". Medicine was not, and is not what it is made out to be. I have been happy, but unfulfilled working in biotech research. As trite as it may sound, I strive to work with and help people directly, as opposed to head-nods and grunts while working with introverted lab-rats (another post, for another time I suppose).

Anyhow, I asked my dentist earlier this summer if I could shadow him. It began as a general curiosity, but I soon began to realize that this would be an ideal career. A perfect balance of science, health-care, and an eye for aesthetic detail. His technical skill was very impressive, and contrary to what many dentists say, his patients were for the most part, appreciative of his efforts. He had an ideal work-life balance. So, I purchased a Kaplan DAT book later in the summer, and I plan to sit for the exam on Sept. 26.

So, if you've made you're way through my autobiography, here are my ?'s:

1) I withdrew my spot at UWSOM rather late in the cycle, only a month before school was to begin. Will admission committees have access to this information, and will they see this as a red flag (i.e., immaturity, non-committal)? I have yet to fill out the AADSAS, do they ask you if you have ever been accepted to a medical/dental school in the past? I recall that the med school apps. asked this question, which is why I ask.

2) What are my chances of acceptance?

28 years old
B.S. Biology
GPA- 3.89
Science GPA- 3.87 (or thereabouts, trying to recall from my AAMCAS app.)
DAT- Sept. 26 (MCAT-31, so I assume that will translate into a competitive score on the DAT, I hope )
Significant research experience as undergrad, resulting in 1 publication
Significant Hospital Volunteer Work, although NO dental volunteering
Shadowed dentist ~20hrs

Sorry for the long post. All comments are welcome.

We have a classmate who was in med school for 2 years before dent. Yes, the application will ask you if you've applied or were accepted. I would just tell the truth. What you wrote here would be enough to allow me to understand why you want to change careers. From an application standpoint, your gpa etc and research experience are great. Your MCAT translation into a DAT most likely would be a good score but that's up to you. Otherwise, I'd up your shadowing hours so the adcoms know you have seen enough dentistry to know it's for you.

Sorry this is short and choppy the beach is calling me.

Best of luck to you.

Hans----

First off congrats on making a tough decision-----it takes maturity to think deeper than just becoming a doctor for the sake of being called a doctor. I think too many young students find themselves blinded by their center of influence and not necessarily what is best for them. I'm not just talking about medicine vs. dentistry as I saw 2 classmates head for med school because dentistry wasn't what worked for them.

You are a competitive candidate, as far as, gpa and research. Your background with med school will not affect you if presented properly. In fact, may be an adv. Do well on the DAT-----word of warning. MCAT is more cerebral----having to interpret and use applied knowledge. DAT is rote knowledge slightly different and for some easier and for others more difficult. I suspect you'll have no trouble if you have the Kaplan book--- the perceptual area is unlike anything you've done so practice.

Good luck and keep us informed how things are going.

Dr. B

Just tell 'em what you told us and you'll have your choice of schools. 😀

Hey we all make mistakes. No harm no foul. I agree that you should just tell the truth. It makes for a better story anyway. And when I was interviewing applicants I loved a good story.

Definitely spend more time in the dental environment. You should be keeping your hand in it constantly until you are accepted. I wish I had the free time to go shadow a dentist in practice. I'd learn so much about patient/practice management.

for question 1) be honest and they will definately ask you about it. use this as an opportunity to tell the admissions people how dedicated you are to dentistry and not medicine and you'll be fine.

as for the second question you won't know until you've taken your DAT. if you get an academic average of ~20 and a PAT ~20 you can guarantee acceptance somewhere

Thank you everyone for your thoughts/comments. Another question.......

Is it possible to submit your AADSAS app. before you take the DAT. I want to get it in ASAP, but I'm not taking the DAT until late September. I know it's best to get in the AADSAS early, so that's why I'm curious.

YES!!! Submit your AADSAS ASAP. You don't have to put your DAT score on it, and every school needs official scores sent to them anyway. And you'll be lucky if the schools receive your AADSAS materials before your DAT scores at this point anyway. To hasten the process further, know the schools you are applying to - and which ones have the earliest deadlines - when you take the DAT. I think you can pick schools after taking the test. Or did you do that when you registered? Anyway, I don't remember but I just took my GRE (at the same place I took my DAT four years ago), and I chose some schools to send scores out to. (Just so you aren't confused - I am taking GRE to apply to residency programs.)

Thanks for the info dentalman. I'll definitely submit the app. ASAP. By the way, I did have to choose which schools to have my scores sent to when I registered for the DAT. I can't believe it takes so long to process the AADSAS apps......amazing.

Also, how is it studying for GREs after so long out of undergrad? What are you looking to specialize in, or are these General Residency programs?

Buddy,
You're story is pretty similar than mine. I too went into biotech and hated the concept of cell conversation, pretty dull I'll say. I was between PhD and Medicine and my boss at the time told me both options were not the best out there. I always wanted medicine but got married and decided that I wanted to enjoy life and not revolve the next 10 years of my life in med school (I'm 30). After visiting my cousin who's an orthodontist, my curiosity for dentistry began. So, with no dental experience whatsoever, I bought that Kaplan blue book and started studying. Well, my studying investment paid off, I'm in dental school; so my point is, don't worry about your decision of rejecting medschool. It was perhaps a wise decision and you have your reasons for it. Simply study hard, do good on the DAT and you'll be fine. By the way, I used to work at the UCSD Cancer Center in San Diego. Best of luck to you.
