Hi

I'd like to have your opinion about my chances of getting accepted in pharm schools.
- Science GPA = 3.90 (50 cr.)
- Overall GPA = 3.82 (130 cr.)
- 1st time PCAT score = 98
- 2nd time PCAT score = 99
- No experience in pharmacy since I was not allowed to work off-campus.
- Applying to Albany, Buffalo, UF, Howard, LECOM, Mercer, NOVA, Temple, OSU, and Pittsburgh.

I'm only worried about my communication skills since English is my second language (French and Vietnamese are my native language).

From Penn State University (PA).

I took the PCAT at Orlando (FL).

did u really have to ask us that question?

Yes. Although I have good grades and PCAT scores, I have no experience in pharmacy and bad communication skills. I really don't know if I will perform well on the interview.
I've heard that interview is an important step in the process.

i think you will be juuusstt fine. talk about english not being your second language. turn that into an advantage. you can speak THREE languages. talk about how you had to overcome that barrier and you have obviously succeded in flying colors.

be genuine. let them see you really want it. also explain your inability to work off campus. and talk about how you tried to get around that...like talk to pharmacists that you know. visiting pharmacists. let them know that you've made an effort to get to know the field.

Vicky is right! Being multi-lingual is a definite advantage. *Good answer to the question as to why a school should choose you over another candidate or "what are your strengths".* And if your PCAT scores are 98 and 99, your communication skills are probably at LEAST average or you couldn't have managed to score that highly with verbal and reading comp averaged in there!
You'll be fine. Interviews want to see more than just your huge vocabulary- the meaning in what you are saying is the important part. Just go over the answers in your mind, to possible interview questions so that you aren't stumbling for words! :luck:

If you don't get accepted than no one is getting accepted.

funny...
you got 98 percentile the first time and re-took the test?... please dont play us.. ^_^
something is fishy about your gpa + pcat score and your question....

I think I can shed some light...
Some more than others, need to hear how good they are many many times over and over. I don't mean to sound like a shrink, but where does this need to be told you are good so many times comes from?
With that GPA and PCAT, do you really need the stroking?
I don't mean to be rude, but let's see if I can illustrate my point:
"I really think you should take the PCAT and get a 100% to improve your chances"

The first time I took the PCAT was in October 2004, but I thought I did really bad so I retook it a second time in November 2004.
I received the October PCAT score 3 days after taking the November PCAT (it took about 5 weeks!). I'm sure that I was not the only one in this situation last year.

I am very serious about my question.
My fiancee who is already in pharmacy school constantly bugs me and complains about my communication skills, and she says that I won't get accepted anywhere if I can't do well on the interview even if I have a 4.0 GPA and a 99% PCAT score.
I can't verify what she says is true or not since I can't find any stats on this issue.

I've been in the U.S for almost 2 year, so my english speaking is kind of broken...

How is your writing, and how is PCAT Verbal? Because if you have great stats and a great personal statement, there are a lot of universities that do not interview students. You may completely bypass that talking to people anyway.
Now you do want to improve your communications skills, because that will also impact you in your future career.
Once you learn english, communication has to do with a whole lot of other personal traits, not just your language. You have a high GPA, so I am confident you are smart enough to learn the mechanics of conversation. Question is...are you good communicator even in you own language?
If the aswer is yes, then just give yourself the time. It will get there.
If not... then...
I know native speakers that are awful communicators.
+pity+
Tell your fiance to take a hike!

I got 86 on the PCAT Verbal section the 1st time, and 97 the second time.
Writing is definitively not a problem, but only speaking.
I think that I'm a good communicator in my language.
Even though I try to interact with a lot a people, by tutoring, or teaching the organic lab, etc to improve my communication, my fiancee told me that I can't speak like a native american in a couple of years.

Oh well, there's nothing else I can do, I guess I just have to be patient.

What schools don't require an interview? Thanks.

Oh, and I think that most schools are more forgiving if it's obvious that the student is speaking english to the best of their abilities (as long as they can properly communicate what they are trying to say). So, good luck and don't worry. 🙂

If you have such great stats, obviously you are a smart person, that's why I'm wondering why you asked such a stupid question. Of course you will be accepted with those stats!

The only problem I forsee is one with self-confidence. Sure you may get into pharmacy school, but as a pharmacist, you need to be confident in your abilities and not always be second-guessing yourself. So make it a habit to be more confident in yourself now, so you can preform your future job better later.

I've already gone through this process and am in pharmacy school. My GPA and test scores are sort of close to yours and I never dreamed of posting a "Will I get in?" thread on this board. That just ticks off the people who really have legitimate reason to worry about getting in. So you might want to avoid that in the future and just believe in yourself.

Julientampa said:
I am self-confident by nature. I asked myself that question because I heard so many times my fiancee telling me that I will never get accepted if I fail the interview.
I guess you are totally right and I should not listen to anybody and just be confident.

Why are you in a relationship with someone who doesn't support you? My stats are significantly worse than yours and my boyfriend tells me all the time that I'll get into my first choice and that he believes in me! Tell your fiancee what's up!!!! :meanie:

I wish she was like your boyfriend!! I'm still with her because I love her.
Since she's in pharmacy school, she needs my total support.
I try to help her by doing her homework and projects so she have more time to study for her tests. I read her notes and tutor her. I'm afraid by doing this, she won't be a skillful pharmacist since I've ever done everything for her except taking her exams.

Maybe you should start a new thread about ungrateful significant others!!!!
You should stop babysitting your girlfriend and stop believing in what she says about your chances. 😡
