  • I have a 2.93gpa
  • Worked in a pharmacy for 2 years
  • I have atleast 3-4 very good recomendations
  • Just to pcat in augsut, but i dont know how i did 🙁bad
  • Gpa is in an upward trend( last 2 semesters 3.78)
  • 20 years old(i know it doesn't matter,but i thought i would just throw it in there)
  • A's and B's in all science courses(except i got a D in gen chem2 and then i retook it and got an A)
  • I got C's in (psycology, sociology, history, calc) These classes are the ones the brought my gpa so low.
  • I talked to the pharmacist i work with and he told me those social science classes will not be looked at that much.
  • FOR CLASS 2008 ADMISSION
  • (Lets say i get an 85 composite on pcat then????)

I think this would be a good thread for all us fall 2008 applicants to vent off our nervousness of getting accepted for admissions. Honestly, I think you will be middle of the pack for most schools based on your GPA/PCAT/Experiences. I think if you score an 85+ on your PCAT you will dramatically increase your chances of getting an interview where you can show your personality and shine. Don't forget that some schools are more forgiving of academic blunders (such as USN), so don't limit yourself to schools that are only in your immediate area. If you apply to about 5-10 schools, I am sure you will receive an acceptance somewhere. Just stay persistent and don't give up. If your August PCAT doesn't go as well as you wanted it to, make sure you try the October PCAT just to make sure you maximize your chances with a great score that could overshadow your GPA. I will continue this thread by posting my stats so everyone can provide feedback about our stats and the schools we are applying to. To the original poster, I don't mean to thread hijack, I just figured this would keep the thread going for everyone!

justyliz you have no chance of getting in pharmacy school with those stats...............................

Yah justliz is screwed. You should have tried to get a better gpa

Hey guys,

I wasn't trying to come off like the gunner type.. I just figured this would be a good thread to get input from other people about what their chances were of getting into the pharmacy schools of their choice. Let's not focus so much on me and lets hear other people's anxieties so we can help support each other in the application process!

3.2 GPA
BS Psychology
2 years experience
2.50 math and science gpa
80 pcat

I think you have a good chance if you apply broadly to several schools (even ones outside of your area). The only glaring thing on your app is your low science/math GPA... you should try to sell your pharmacy experience to admissions committees in the personal statement. Don't forget that some schools have minimum science/math GPA requirements so make sure you apply wisely to schools that won't pre-screen you before secondaries or interviews. If you really want to stand out, you could sign up for the October PCAT so you can get a stellar PCAT score that would stand out from the rest of the pack. Best of luck!

okey ..

i have bachelor of biology 2006, now am doing my masters, i did not take the pcat yet-january 07- my gpa s 3.17, i dont have all the pre reqs yet..and i just started working as pharm tech at both walgreens and cvs...what you guys think

Sure, I'll bite:

- B.A. in Cognitive Science w/concentrations in neuroscience & psychology
- Cum GPA 3.76 / Sci & Math GPA 3.38 so far
- Finishing prereqs (gen bio, microbio, and stat) at comm. college
- Technician since January '07, certified since May
- Took the PCAT in August, think I did well except for math
- Applying to the University of Washington

Either I'm competitive or I'm not... not going to worry about it unless I don't get in. 🙂

I think you have a really great chance of getting into UW as long as you score in the high 80's/90's on the PCAT. However, keep in mind that UW is a pretty competitive program, so make sure you apply to a couple other schools if you are intent on starting pharm school in fall 2008. Two of my close friends that applied to UW both got admitted as reapplicants. Their stats were a lil bit lower than yours though, so you should have a better chance than they did as a first-time applicant.

I think you should really take the PCAT in October if you are really serious about fall 2008 acceptance. I also wonder how you are able to pull off pharm teching at BOTH WAGS and CVS. You must have a very busy schedule if you are also taking pre-requisite classes at a college, which is quite admirable. I think you should try to score high on the October PCAT and go for about 5 schools to make sure you get into a program you will be happy with.

Thanks for the feedback, justyliz. Here's hoping for a pretty PCAT score and inspirational essays, since I have decided that I would rather wait an additional year than move away from Seattle. 🙂

You look fairly set with those stats, assuming a good interview. Which of those schools is your top choice?

I completed 38 credit hours already, and 1 more year to go and 80% sure I will apply to Fall 2008.

Overall GPA 3.370

Science GPA 3.85

No PCAT score yet,

No pharmacy experience and no BS degree. 🙁

Classes i screwed up on, C in Communication, C in Eng 102, and F in anatomy and Physiology repeated with a B.

when I calculate science GPA i omitted the F in Anatomy did i do that right?

Thanks in advance. I think my chances are very slim to get in by Fall 2008 too. 🙁

The great thing about your application is your very high science GPA. 🙂 If I'm not mistaken (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) most schools will count Anatomy/Physiology in your science GPA because it usually comes in a lab/lecture setup. As for your stats, you should keep in mind that more and more schools are looking for applicants that have around 60-80 college credits. If you can bust out 18-20 credit semesters this semester and in spring semester, you'll have a chance to bring that GPA up and show admissions committees that you can handle the courseload. I'd say try the October PCAT, see how you do, then apply to a few schools if you score 80+ to try your chances.

Out of all the schools I listed, my top choice is the University of Arizona (go alma mater!) But I definitely wouldn't mind getting into Creighton since I have a couple of friends in the area.

Hi Justyliz,

I mistaken about my total credit hours earned it should be 38. Anyway, thanks for your great advices. However, I thought most schools they only look at the overall GPA first and if it's under 3.6 they will toss our application? That's why I'm very worried now. 🙁

Not with 3.6. Below 3.0 - very likely, but 3.6 is a very decent GPA, there are schools out there with 3.6 being the average GPA of their incoming class. Don't worry about that, at least, unless you have dismal application other than GPA.

Arizona is a very good school, I have a few friends out there. 🙂 Especially if you like being involved and doing a lot of extracurriculars, they are one of the better schools out there.

Yeah UofA! I guess this means we will be competing for a spot then, especially since we have the same major and about the same GPA. Just took the PCAT so I don't know what I got there. I'm worried that I don't have enough pharm experience; I've been volunteering for about eight months but that's not as much as some people.

If you can graduate with an overall and science gpa of 3.6 or better thats outstanding imo.

I'd say
3.9= amazing
3.6= very good
3.3= good
3.0= decent
<3.0= not very good

You also have to keep in mind if the person has a bachelors/upper division science or not.

how much does a bacherlors / upper division science account for? .1 in GPA? What about going to a prestigious school?

There's no way to numerically quantify the GPA adjustment that a bachelor's / upper division science would have. Every school's admission commitee has different perspectives on GPA, but the one thing that stays pretty consistent in most schools is that they are looking for the total package (GPA, PCAT, experience, interview skills). They want a well-rounded individual who they think will be able to handle the rigorous courseload of pharmacy school and also succeed in the profession.

Earlier in some other post, somebody made a very good point about getting to know the admissions counselors at the school you are applying, as they will be able to hint at what the school is looking for. I'd like to think of it like getting a job - you need a good calling card so the employer calls you (your application) and then you also need to prove your worth when they finally see your personal skills (the interview).

3.84 Overall
3.7 Science...i still have to take Anatomy, ECON, and Microbiology
4 years as a tech at CVS...Certified since March '06
B.S. in Biobehavioral Health at PSU
2 LOR from Pharmacists and hopefully 1 from a prof. im doing research with
Volunteering/Community Service...Habitat, hospital volunteer
PCATs are in Oct.

I was thinking of applying to schools just in Pennsylvania. Kind of really looking at Thomas Jefferson with rolling admissions. I'm just really anxious that I won't get anything since I'm staying in one state.

Thanks guys.

My stats and ECs are pretty good. The worst thing for those items is that my pharmacy experience is only 45 hours of volunteer work. My primary concern is the other factors involved.

The numbers I have seen show that pharmacy schools mostly accept females. As a male that people accuse of not smiling and of being cold, I feel that I have little chance against the many attractive, outwardly cheerful female pre-pharms at my school.

I kind of just want to give up.

I don't think schools accept more females than males. I think more females apply more than males. When I was taking the PCAT, about 80% of the individuals taking the test were females

BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Minor in Chemistry
Cumulative GPA: 3.925 / Science GPA: 3.80
PCAT Composite: 87%, with Chemistry 92%, Verbal 90%, Reading 62%, Biology 80%, Quantitative 80%.
Experience: Worked about 9 months at a local retail pharmacy as a licensed technician.
Schools I'm applying to: University of Arizona, Creighton University, University of Missouri - Kansas City, Shenandoah University, LECOM - Bradenton

your stats look good. do you have any EC activities outside of working. Volunteer work/leadership roles? I think if you have these too then there's no doubt you'll get in. I wouldn't even bother wasting my money to apply to all 5 schools. Just choose your top 3.

he/she's obviously kidding..you'd be put on academic probation and eventually kicked out of the college if you had that low of a GPA, hence, you wouldn't be able to get a bachelors

actually my school requires at least a D average in all courses to get a BS

ok guys...im really nervous..

this is my second time applying..im currently finishing my masters this semester in biochemistry..i have also done previous research in the lab on NO and currently on hydrogels and their drug effects..i tutor in sciences..last year I taught general chemistry labs and this year i am teaching organic chemistry labs at GMU. i had a 3.4 undergrad gpa and a 3.5 grad gpa...my pcat scores last year were about in the 60-70 percentile although i got mid 70's to 80's on my bio, science and math...do i stand any chance of getting in anywhere this year....im really nervous cause i know my pcats aren't that great but I'm hoping having a masters degree and all the lab and teaching experience will help!!

oooh judge me! lol

Well, I think you've got a great chance to get into a few schools given that you have a lot of pharmacy experience and a real solid PCAT score. You just need to make sure that the schools you apply to don't have a minimum science/cumulative GPA cut-off. I'd say if you apply earlier (Sept/Oct), you have a great chance for admissions.

I think you will improve your chances by finishing up your masters in biochemistry and pulling up your GPA to make up for your PCAT score. I really think you'll benefit a lot by just taking the PCAT again in October. Given that you've taken it already, there's not much you can lose - you will most likely at least see a 5-10 percentile increase if you put in some work until October.

um, a bit nervous here but...

- science gpa: 2.93 (got c/c+ in ochem 2, biochem, physics 2 and intro bio 1 (1/2 as in semester)
- non science gpa: 3.4
- pre-req gpa: 3.02 (pharmcas)
- overall gpa: 3.15
- not done w/ 4 pre-reqs which i expect to get A's in at the comm coll i'm going to
- b.a. in biology
- had e.c. during college, but not so much now... just hobbies
- did some volunteer work at a private retail pharmacy for about 7 months, at a family medical center for about 5 months, and at an army field hospital for about 6 months.
- took pcat in june, got 73 composite, but under 50 in chem and math so will be taking it again in oct
- lor from the pharmacist i volunteered for, a non-science prof, and the science prof i did research with
- applying to like, every single cali coll and some out of state ones...

what do u think?:scared:

I'll throw my hat into the mix and be judged....

Overall GPA as of 80 credit hours: 3.57
PCAT: 93
1 year research in Organic chem
1 year as a "TA"
No significant volunteer work (Well, none that I can put on my application. Earliest I can start is October).

my stats are:
science gpa 3.2 got a C in Ochem2 (the only C on my transcript)
overall gpa 3.57
havent taken the pcat yet but i am sure i will do bad coz i havent prepared yet, i take it in oct😱🙁:scared:.
and hopefully i will be done with my pharmcas by the end of next week...it's so hard to work on pharmcas while going to school full time and job.

what do u guys think of my stats?

feedback greatly appreciated

So what's my chance? Should I even bother to apply for fall 2008? or I should get some more volunteer experience before applying next year?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Just as a side note, I want everyone to know that my opinion is NO way similar to someone who's had more experience (like omnione). My comments are merely opinions that I've gathered from lurking the boards, and admissions counselors.

You'll do just fine... pick 3-4 schools and don't waste your money on too many schools. As long as you get some kind of experience come interview time, you'll most likely get admission to your top choice. With some good experience and EC's, you're really at the point where you could be selective on what schools YOU want to apply to. Don't let schools pick you, you pick the school that most fits you! If you can't get any good pharmacy school experience before interview time, be prepared to answer how you KNOW that you want to a pursue a career in pharmacy.

Your science/cumulative GPA are good, I'd prolly say you are in the middle of the pack for most schools so a great PCAT score would really distinguish you from the other applicants. Try to get some experience come interview time so you can shine. Just remember that schools are almost always looking for the COMPLETE package.. so if there are things that your application is lacking in, try to sell them in either your personal statement or interview.

I'd say you should study up for the October PCAT like it was your job, and apply to a handful of schools. If you score mid-high 80's+ on your Oct. PCAT, I think you have a really good chance of getting in. I really encourage you to apply this year... you don't really have much to lose (besides an extra year in undergraduate taking classes that may not even interest you).

You have good EC's and pharmacy experience, which really strengthen your application. Keep in mind that University of Arizona heavily emphasizes PCAT composite and Chemistry subject portions, so it may not hurt to retake one last time to see if you can improve on your other scores. Also, don't forget that UofA won't look at applicants who have gotten C's in organic chemistry so if that applies to you, you may want to look into that. I'd say you should just keep doing what you're doing, and try to study really hard for the October PCAT to really improve your chances.

No significant volunteer experience. Although when I worked for the SPCA, I oversaw our volunteers.

Currently, I hold two jobs--one in an organic extraction lab and the other
at the UT Health Science Center in a genetics lab researching ALS.

I have no pharmacy experience.

I have 2 LORs (all that is required)--one from a mentor/supervisor for an internship I had this past summer and the other is from my organic chem professor.

I am mainly concerned about my lack of pharmacy experience.

PCAT - 70th🙁 (but taking it again in october)

Working as a pharmacy tech. for about 2 months and will be certified in about 2 weeks (hopefully! 😱)
