So this is how i stand...
1. Currently I'm at a 3.6 GPA
2. doing a double major French/biology
3. Im planning to take my DAT's in May and i expect to easily get 20+
4. Im currently shadowing a dentist (who graduated valedictorian at Stony Brook Dental)
5. Im expecting to graduate this December, a semester earlier.
6. I am the secretary of the French Honors society, Pi Delta Phi, at my college (I'm hispanic and French is not my native language, but have spoken it for the last 7 years)
7. I'm also part of some others... Phi Eta Sigma (for freshman that had a 3.5 and higher), Roger Watson Science, etc.
8. Oh and i really haven't done any community service.

What are my chances for Stony Brook and Columbia?
I know theyre highly competitve and im nervous. But, I'm hoping to graduate with a slightly higher GPA because during Fall semester I will only be taking French courses, now that i have finished all my biology major prerequisites.

Oh and what do u recommend that I do during that semester I will have off before starting dental school? Should it be at all related to dental?

I love how everyone just seems to think they'll "easily" get a 20+ on the DAT. I'm not saying you won't. I'm just saying don't take that for granted. I thought I would get a 20 on the DAT as well but sure enough I walked out of the testing center with an 18.
Other than that your stats look fine. Best of luck!

Sorry I really didnt mean it to sound cocky. I'm currently preparing with Kaplan classes and haven't gotten less than a 19 with the few practice exams Ive taken... especially considering that the first two I took a few months ago I didnt really study for. However, Im already into hardcore DAT study mode now. But you're right... you never know.

No, no.. I'm sure you'll do just fine.

be careful with Kaplan as well. I took the class and thought it was good prep material, but you never know how the real DAT will turn out. Ironically I did better in all the sciences on the actual DAT than in the Kaplan practices. The opposite happened with my QR and RC - usually averaged 20-22 on those, and, well, check predents 👎.

i guess what i am saying is don't make the mistake that I did and think you will do well in some areas because you did so in Kaplan. stay in hardcore study mode and you will be fine. good luck!

edit - about the semester you will have off - ENJOY IT! I graduated this december, and have 6 months to do whatever. i work every night, but other than that i have done absolutely nothing, and it has turned out to be all I thought it could be 🙂

I'll probaby do some working (off the books hopefully). Saving up a tad for dental school definitely doesnt hurt. But traveling for a month would be wonderful too ::sigh:::

i received 24+ on kaplans and on the real dat only got 19/19/21. i suggest taking other practice tests to get a better idea of where you stand. everything else seems just in place.

why stony brook and columbia? there are other good schools too?

try doing some community service? you still got time from now until may 15th.

just apply early and do well on your DATs.

start looking for LORs and doing your personal statment

keep on top of things and i think you will be fine

everything else looks good

well i do want to stay in NY... and stony brook is looking oh so nice because of its price. Its definitely a highly competitve school and the reason everybody wants it . Buffalo is great too.

I do have some LORs from a few bio professors, the head of honors department, head of french department, etc.
But yea i do have to get on top of starting my personal statement and taking advantage of practice interviews.

did you ever see stony brook dental school? it looks horrible, got to columbia instead
