  1. Pre-Podiatry
I have a S GPA-3.0 same as the overall, I took the DAT's and i got an 18. I also have two F's (orgo) and i retook the classes, and two W's. I am applying without a BA, but I have much more than 90 credits.

I Shadowed a podiatrist for a while and I took a recommendation letter from him, i also have two letter from MD's, i honestly dont know if it will help, plus two from college professors.

I applied to the following schools for sept 08
NYCPM
OCPM
TUSPM
Scholl college of podiatric med
Barry College of podiatric med

P.S i took CLEP for general Chem and Biology that I did really well on it, does anyone know how pod schools view those exams and whether it counts as a course?

Thanx

Those letters will be fine but just because they are from an M.D. will not make that big of a difference, just the material they write about you which is hopefully good. The two W's are not that big of a deal as long as you retook those classes and made a C or better. As for the Orgo classes with 2 F's that will weigh more highly on you. You didn't mention what you got when you retook them but I would at least hope you got a C or better, preferably better. I would also think about taking the MCAT and making around a 22+ as some of these schools you mentioned on applying to only accept the MCAT, a good MCAT would also weight out your 3.0. Good luck!

dicodpm, getting in shouldn't be a problem, just like one with these stats could go caribbean and be an MD. a monkey can get into medical school, but it takes a doctor to graduate. what's important is if you are capable of handling the rigors of the medical school. if you failed organic chem twice, don't even have a bachelors, took CLEP for biology and chemistry, those draw red flags.
do you have any work experience in the hospital? do you really enjoy this field?
if you retook those orgo classes you shouldnt get lower than a B-, and i would take the the mcat as well.

THank you for your replies.

I retook those organic chemistry classes, passed with a C, my other grades are higher and without the organic the GPA would be much higher. For CLEP i scored 68 out of 70 for biology and i have to admit it prepared me better for the DAT than any bio class, besides i already took AnatomyI, and II and other elevated sci courses.
I dont think i can take the mcats, its a different structre and the nearest date is in august i think. I called all those schools previously mentioned and they said they had no problem with the DAT's.

your question about podiatry if whether i wanted to do it or not, all I can say is that since i was a sophmore I wanted to do podiatry and visited the schools plenty of times, I appeared alot in open houses. My intention is to get into podiatry and no other.

for the letters they said realy good things about me, especially the podiatrist that I shadowed.

What should I do in the summer time, I'm trying to impress the admissions committee and hopefully have them concentrate on everything else but my grades.

Thank you for your help

When you say the MCATs are a different structure, do you mean harder? If you do, then be prepared for the boards. IMHO, if the MCAT is too difficult, medical school will be as well.

I don't think that admissions can concentrate their attention on a lot of other things. It's grades + MCAT + EC's + interview. But I think a lot of emphasis is on grades and MCAT.

Hi, kinda along the same lines I am a little nervous about my chances too. I go to a very prestigious school that is very well known for its challenging sciences. I have taken biology and physics here. The thing is, I got a C in Bio 1, Bio 1 lab, and bio 2 lab. In bio 2 I got a D. Right now I am taking bio 2 over again. What grade should I get in the class for my chances of acceptance to be great? Keep in mind that all the other sciences (gen chem and orgo) I took at a state school during the summer because it was cheaper. Also, my cummulative GPA is around a 3.3 and my BCPM is around a 3.1. I have great LORs, research and clinical experience, have shadowed a podiatrist, a good personal statement, am involved in tons of extracurriculars, and have studied abroad and had a paper published. I have not taken the mcat yet, but what score should I aim for?

Aim for an A in your repeat BIO 2 course, absolutely. That's the safest you can be. I would think at least a 23/24 for the MCAT to be a competitive applicant, but always do your best. You can't do anymore than your best.

hey guys!! my friend wants to get into podiatry school but she has a 2.5 science gpa and an 3.3 overall gpa. what do you think her chances are? should she retake a bunch of classes?🙂

I agree with you. Always shoot for the highest grade possible. Instead of just doing what you can to get by and get accepted, get awesome grades and get loads in scholarship money.

I got an 18 on the DAT, is this a proper score for podiatry?

First of all, scholl will not accept the DAT so count that school out. OCPM is becoming more strict (it's about time) with the DAT and with your grades, I don't think they would accept you with that score. NYCPM and Temple seem pretty content with accepting the DAT from what I researched and asked the admissions people about. NYCPM does not even look at the PAT section which a bonus for those who cop out and take the dental admissions test.

Barry would probably be the easiest school to get accepted to out of the ones you picked out. However, its quite late in the application cycle so I would not count on anything really in all honesty.

Ignore the post above me🙄! You should contact each school to see if your score is acceptable. An MD LOR might be seen as a neg. rather than a pos. The fact that you have taken the DAT vs. the MCAT is already questionable so I would not add more confusion by including an LOR from a 3rd profession, JMHO.

Um, this information is true even though it may sound harsh. Scholl does not take the MCAT anymore, that is a fact. And OCPM is more or less pushing for everyone to do this exam as well. We are going to podiatric medical school, not dental school...and schools will be changing over to MCAT ONLY in the near future. In addition, the average AA score for the DAT at Temple last year was 18.4. NYCPM does take the DAT and I was told by the admissions staff they don't look at the perceptual ability section. I've interviewed at all 8 schools and researched them quite extensively...so I'm not gonna put bs on here.

BTW, don't feel that I am bashing Barry. However, out of all the schools he mentioned, I feel its the easiest to gain acceptance to. Pretty much everyone who applies gets granted an automated e-mail interview less than 6 hours after they process their application. What other school does that? Another thing would be the extremely easy and lax interview experience. I believe the academics at Barry are tough (like the other 7 schools) but the admissions process certainly is not.

👍 I agree with you man... I would take this advice

Thank you guys...

before i take the DAT i called all those schools including scholl, and they all assured me that they accept it. Scholl said, in special cases we accept the DAT so you can go ahead and send us your score when apply. regardless i know scholl is a tough one but its worth a try.

For the MD LOR, he was an orthopedic who expressed his openion about my interest in medicine in general, and talked about my personality as a hard worker. I also got two LOR from two podiatrists that I shadowed and the letters wer amazing.
Im also planing on doing research in the summer time, i dont know how much it will help. I dont think i will go for the mcats, the next time to take it will be in august anyways so im sure its to late.

from what i know and read so far, is that podiatry school needs to know how much the prospective student is interested in podiatry, so how can i prove to them that?.

The difference between a person who is interested in podiatry and another who couldn't make it to MD/DO school or dental is mainly the interest in podiatry, and believing that podiatry is not a backup.

Good Job!👍 The best advice I recieved from the senior members(you know who you are) on SDN is to always call the school first and take what you read on SDN with a grain of salt!:welcome:
