Hey everyone,

I'm a junior at Tennesee-Knoxville. My dad is a general dentist. I plan on applying in June. I haven't taken the DAT yet but I'm currently taking the Kaplan course now. I know it's hard to judge bc I haven't taken the DAT.

Here is what I've done so far
GPA: 3.38
Psychology major
120hrs of shadowing experience (1 General, 1 OMFS, 1 GPR)
Order of Omega Honor Society
Inter Fraternity Council Director of Recruitment
Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity
SGA Campaign Grass Roots Coordinator
Avid Fly-fishermen (dexterity)

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think you're shadowing hours is great and EC involvement is good. Do you have hours in community service? Your 3.38 GPA is overall or science? Regardless, it's on the lower end. Hopefully you have a high science GPA... It seems that applicants with a sci GPA lower than 3.5 have trouble getting in. Will you be finishing a semester before you apply so that you'll boost your gpa? Your DAT probably needs to be a 20 at least.

Here are the avgs. for University of Tennessee. It always helps to be way ahead of the averages in some way. So hopefully you can do really well on the DAT and get in over here. Best of luck!

That was my overall average. My sGPA is a 3.45. I don't even know where to begin adding up com. service. I've been volunteering at this place called The Love Kitchen since I was a Freshman. I would work about 4 hours a week. So quite a bit.

Thanks for the averages. I've got some great LOR's coming in. I realize I'm going to have to really did in on the DAT.

I know UT doesn't use it, but what has been everyones experience with AADSAS? Any pointers?

Thanks!

Score 20+ on the dat and you'll have a good chance.

wtf?

Don't put too much stock into the "average" GPAs and scores. The average for white and asian students admitted this year was really high -- it's been the most competitive year they've seen. The students with 3.3's and 3.4's didn't have much luck. Neither did the non-traditionals with upward trends but low cumulative averages (me!). From what I have seen, super high DAT scores don't impress U-T enough to offset a mediocre GPA -- as long as all your scores add up to be over 130, you should get an interview. You should consider taking more classes over the summer to raise your GPA as much as you can before you apply. They will calculate a core GPA with just your prerequisites (the 45 credits listed on their website), and that should also be competitive.

Hope to see you in class in 2010!

Also, this probably goes without saying, but apply to other schools besides U-T! And check out the U-T Memphis Acceptance thread for "insight" into this year's admissions process.

Do you have a question about The Love Kitchen? It's basically a soup kitchen that serves the homeless and lower income families. Basically what I do is bag over 75 bags with canned goods and other non-perishable items, bag up things of meat, and distribute them to people who come in.

lol nice job of bumping the tread without saying something stupid like:
"something goes bump in the night..."

Do well on your DAT's, apply smart and early, and you'll be a semi-competitive applicant....
