ok so im almost in my senior year now..and planning on applying to med skools in july...im actually taking my mcats end of july...but i'll get in the applications probably before that...
anyways so my gpa is REALLY low...

heres a summary:

BIO 1500: B+
BIO 2220 (Micro Bio): B
Gen Chem 1: B
Organic Chemistry 1: first time got a D, then repeated and got a B
BIO 1510: B+
BIO 2600 (cell biology): B-
CHM1000 (i dont even know if this counts): A
Gen chem 2: C
Physics 1: A (actually I took it at another university and got an F in my freshman year, but repeated it at my current university and got an A...so i dunno if both will count or just the latest one because the other was a transfer credit?)
Bio 3100 (biochem): C
Physics 2: A
Organic 2: B
ENG 1020: A

I dont know what other courses I need to put here also but...do i have ANY chances for MD? my GPA is around 3.45 right now...it fluctuates...+/- 0.5 but cumulative gpa for my current university is 3.45 (I think they dont count the transfer credits thats why)..
i dunno about my sci GPA ...but how does this look?
do i have absolutely no chance....shud i even apply or forget about it?\

Oh and im taking a kaplan course for my MCAT right now...so it shudnt be that bad...although i suck at standardized tests i think i can pull off a 29-30...:-s

and i dont have any special ECs either...i worked in a psych research lab for 3 months...then ER research assistant for 8 months...and currently working at a biomolecular lab...i am also a part of NSCS but i dunno if that even helps...i will be shadowing before applying...so within next 2 months i shud have 20+ hours of shadowing

wat shud i do?

please let me know guyz

thanks in advance....

ok I did a quick excel calc because I was mad bored, and if those are all your science grades, it comes out to 2.82ish. If you retook a class, both grades count (no matter where you took it each times) for allopathic. For osteo. you would have a higher number since they only consider the retake.

you can do a search in mdapps for people under a 3.0 science and under 3.5 cum (if you added in your grades before retake).

i think your best bet is to aim for DO.

omg. 2.83. thats horribe!!
im a psych major...does psych count towards sci???

sigh. here i come caribbean

you should try DO first and then carribean

i wud but...DO isnt even accepted in other countries...
atleast with MD i can work anywhere after i do my residency in the states :-s

That is if you can match. It is getting more and more difficult coming out of the Caribbean.

I would go for DO school. You could at least retake a few classes and your GPA would jump up considerably. Also, I have heard that it is much easier to apply for residency as a DO than as an MD from the Caribbean.

thats true but....if you go to one of the better caribbean schools...AUC/SGU....pretty much more than 90% of the student get a residency in US. i mean if i DO go to caribbean i'll be going to one of these...
i dunno about DO...its not known as much outside the states...:-s so its more risky for me because i dunno if i'll be staying here rest of my life :-s lol

OHHH ohhh!!! and i forgot to ask...
are the LABS counted in the sci gpa? like the labs i took with the above classes..gen chem 1, gen chem 2, orgo 1, orgo 2, physics 1, physics 2 and micro labs...
cause i forgot to put the grades for those
can someone please answer that for me thanxxx!!!

can someone please calculate my exact final sci gpa if i give em all the courses/labs with grades! pleassee??

i love ms excel. go for it.

list your grades/credits in this format

grade of course on the left column (4.0 - A/A+, 3.7 - A-, 3.3 B+, 3.0 B, 2.7 B-, 2.3 C+, etc)
credit hours of course on the right column (ie 4 cr lecture/2 cr lab)

multiply adjacent columns, sum the rows of third column divide by sum of credits

1. Are you a URM? (under-represented minority)
2.It looks like you have a lot of exposure to the research environment. Have you conducted any of your own research? Any publications?
3. Are you picky about whether you're called an MD or DO by the end?

Best case: you're a URM and you have a publication in your name. I would say, ace some upper level science courses your senior year(easier said than done, I know), and really pull a strong GPA overall in that year. And you pull a 35 on your MCAT. Only then would I consider applying this year.

If not, I think you should take a year off after you graduate to do some volunteer work(assuming you haven't done any) and take 1-2 semesters full of upper-level science courses and do really well before applying. As far as your chances at a DO school are concerned, I think they're also a bit shaky because of your GPA.

Basically, if you don't nail your MCAT, don't apply this year. (PS I was a psyc major and from what I can tell, it doesn't work against you but for the most part, none of your psyc classes will count as science classes, unless they are specifically designated as "neuroscience" classes).
