Hello All,

I am an IMG and planning to apply this yr for the 2011 match. Here are my stats and I would like some feedback as to my chances.

Would like to apply in Internal Medicine as well as Family Medicine. Thinking of applying to transitional year programs as well.

IMG graduated from medical school in 2006
Green card holder
USMLE 1 score: 87
USMLE 2 score CK: 78
USMLE 2 CS: will give in September 2010
Have strong LORs from home country
In process of collecting American LORs

Since June 2010, engaged in clinical observorship and research in a teaching hospital. Planning to do community service and continue American clinical/research experience.

What do you think about my chances of securing a spot in the 2011 Match?

How many programs do you think I should apply to? I was guessing about 100-150????

If a hospital has both FP and IM programs, can I apply to both programs within the SAME hospital or does that reflect badly on my application?

Thank you for your time and would appreciate any input.

I don't want to discourage you, your numbers don't look strong to me for an IMG
Depends on where you want to match at. If you want to end up at a small community hospital, I assume your numbers are sufficient.
I suggest you take step 3.
I've seen IMGs with >95 on step 1 and 2, still didn't match for IM

I agree, your numbers are poor for an FMG. Most non-American FMGs who match, in my observation, score at least 90s on their Steps. You may have a better shot at Family Medicine than IM, but there are a lot of factors to consider like location of the residency programs (Midwest and Southeast programs tend to be less competitive), university vs. community programs, etc. An IM residency might be possible but you will have to work for it.

A 78 on CK is like a 191. That's not a good score. It is just above passing. Most people go up from Step 1 to step 2. That may be problematic especially since many people in the US feel that many IMGs don't have great clinicals and step 2 is a much more clinical exam.

All you can do is hope to get more clinical experience in the US and get good letters and then apply to a lot of programs.

Looks like a couple is account sharing (previous post stating one is a DO student at Western looking at Psych, the spouse is an FMG with crappy scores, going for IM).

I figured as much, based on the post history. I didn't realize SDN was rationing new accounts now. 😉
