Hi, I am a 27 year old junior majoring in sociology and pre-dentistry. I hope to become a psychiatrist but i realize I have huge obstacles. When I was 20 years old, I became addicted to meth and heroine. I battled with the drug for over 4 years and accumulated several things on my criminal record. I was convicted of disorderly conduct (high), trespassing(sleeping on a college campus), giving out false information (2X)( being to high to properly give my name out) Forgery(signing the wrong name)...I was also charged and dismissed of giving out false information (2X), theft by deception(not making payments on a sofa from rent-a-center), forgery(signing the wrong name),resisting arrest ( caught sleeping in park).....I have been off of drugs for over 3 years and have completely changed my life around. I currently have a 3.6 GPA and a 3.8 Science GPA. I will graduate after only 3 years. I have extensive volunteer work and I serve on the Student Government. What should I do? Are my chances completely destroyed?

As long as you havent been convicted of a felony, you can become licensed to write prescriptions as a doctor.

As far as chances go, you know you've got a long way to convince admissions to take a chance on you.

Your personal statement should be awesome though. I'd think you need a ton of service to offset your history, and a stellar DAT to match that GPA. Congrats on the change though. Best of luck.

Yikes! That's some bad choices that you've made. Any convictions? Any felonies? Any convictions related to drugs? have you spoke with a pre-dental or pre-medical advisor about your situation?

I wish you the best of luck.

For someone that has truly been through the depths I pray you make it man, Im truly happy that you've turn yourself around and I hope you get in.

All the best... and yes I think you have a chance

OK mate…I'm going to put all those peachy emotions aside for a sec and put a couple of things in front of you like it is …
If you live in a state or a city where you have a dental school, call them and set up a meeting with the dean or associate dean of student affairs and explain him or her your situation. That person might be hard to get in touch with since the admission cycle has started and they are all very busy but make sure to tell the front desk that you are not an applicant for this cycle.
Sad thing is if you have anything on your criminal record, you are pretty much out of luck. Dental school or any other health profession for that matter will not take a chance with someone who has a record (no matter what) – it is one of those non-written rules and actually our professors talk about it almost all the time.
Sorry, I'm telling you all this but it is better you talk to them directly now and set your course (degree plan) accordingly….
Best of luck !!!
