Haven't taken the MCAT yet, BUT given my scores on practices tests I am expecting between a 30-32.

GPA:
3.3

ECs:

  • VP of Honor Society
  • Active member of AED
  • Over 700 hundred hours of paid clinical experience
  • Currently volunteering in the hospital of the university I intend on applying to
  • No research experience however (Is this an issue 😕)
  • I am also very active in a university affiliated religious group, should I mention that on my apps? Or leave it out?
Thanks,

Lauren

I have a similar GPA and the same extra curric. as you except I have research experience and I have only heard from a few school. You need to get above a 30 to have any shot at MD schools. As for the religious stuff, mention it only if it pertains to medicine or if you devote your time and are really passionate about a certain aspect (like service to the community). Also, if you really want a shot where you are volunteering, make sure to meet people and have them give you recommendations. This way you can get an interview at a school you may not have otherwise because of the people you know there.

For MD, a 3.3/29 gave past applicants a 27.2% chance of an acceptance. For 3.3/32 is was 39.7%, and for 3.3/35 it was 51.3%. You might have a better chance if all your lower grades were first year, if you'd provide diversity in the class a given school is forming, or have some other modifying factor you haven't mentioned.

For DO, I think that a score of 28 would give you a good chance of acceptance somewhere.

I would mention the church volunteering as well as any general community service you've done besides (perhaps though AED?). Do you have some physician shadowing yet? It would be a good idea to include DO docs among those you ask for the sake of getting a LOR, and at least one doc should be in primary care if not already done. A lack of research isn't an issue so much when you are particularly strong in another area, as you are for clinical experience.
