Hey all, let me start by saying I'm a little embarassed to be posting my entire situation, but I feel I must to get some opinions on my chances. I am 22 years old and I want to be a doctor. It's what I've wanted to do since I was in high school. Once I got out of high school I struggled with college, attending a community college. The ONLY science class I've taken that's a pre-req is the first Biology course...which I received a B in.
My GPA, finally declared my major as Economics, is an embarassing 2.6.

I am now out of the community college and attending a university.
I plan on taking 2-3 pre-reqs now and the upper divison classes for my major, and am going to get all A's in each class. There are about 18 classes left I have to take....if I get A's in those classes along with volunteer hours and research experience what do you think my chances are?

My personal story is fantastic for acceptance in my opinion as well...my mom died when I was 13 due to malpractice of a physician and that is part of my drive for becoming a doctor. I lived with an abusive father alone from the age of 13-21 and that had an influence on the poor quality of my grades before this point.

Let me know what you all think or if you want some more info...thanks so much in advance before hand!

I'm not sure how many I've accrued, I'd guess around 60-70. The classes left will be around 60 hours I believe because the prereqs are all 4 credit hours.

Only 6 credit hours have been taken at the university thus far also. GPA@uni=3.8

Thanks for the quick reply

EDIT: just checked the info and I have 75 total units (a lot more than i realized!)

Your chances depend on many factors.

1) If you get straight As for another 75 credit hours, you'd have a cGPA of 3.3 and a very high science/BCPM GPA. With the steep upward grade trend, and a strong MCAT score you'd be competitive for some medical schools. Another year of straight As would make you even more competitive.

For AACOMAS DO med schools, you could further raise your cGPA by retaking some of your lowest grades, as only the most recent class counts for them (provided credit hours are the same or greater; need not be at the same school or have an identical course title). For MD schools, to become more competitive, you'd have the option of completing a Special Masters Program (SMP) which would override the low GPA with excellent performance.

2) You'd also need to develop the usual and customary ECs, which you'll see discussed often in this forum.

3) Strong Letters of Recommendation are needed, too, along with decent essays, and appropriate interview skills.
