SDN Community,

Long time lurker here but, decided to finally sign on in order to hopefully get some insight into my chances.

I know most of the community here is American however, I am Canadian and am looking for some advice when it comes to American Schools.

I understand that your application cycle works a bit differently but I've noted that several schools have a November 1st application deadline and I'm interested in applying to those schools.

Currently I have a 3.7 (OMSAS gpa)...not sure how that converts over to AMCAS and my MCAT is a 30S (9V, 10P, 11B S).

Some of my extra-curriculars include: I took an EMT course in another country and was on an ambulance with paramedics and doctors for 2 months (260 hours), I have 200 hours in my local hospital volunteering, I'm a Sudent Senator well as I'm a member of the Student Caucus for my Department at University, I have worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor at a community centre for the past 3 years, have worked as a camp counsellor at an overnight camp (shared living quaters with small kids) for one summer on swim staff, and am Secretary in a club at university I've been involved with for 2 years. As a youth I took part in a Youth Committee that was run by the Town I live in and was attended by the Mayor. I live in a community under 250,000 just outside Toronto, Ontario. I have others but they are minor in comparison.

If anyone can give me some advice as to what my chances are at American Schools and which ones I am realistically looking at for the November 1st deadline it would be much appreciated.

I forgot to mention that I've done research with a professor at the University I attend over the summer when I wrote my MCAT. I worked on a team with a Masters student and a Post-doc; Molecular Biology lab - developed a cell line with a doxycyclin inducible promotor to test the effect of a protein on another protein = long story short. No publication.

So many views and no advice?

Applying this late in the season is not in your best interests, or anyone's who does not have excellent stats. Infer what you will from the following data:

From AAMC: In 2010, of 1340 international applicants without a US state of residence (991 from Canada +349 all other) only 14.9% matriculated to a US med school (86 Canadian + 105 all other), whereas 43.6% of total applicants did matriculate.

2010 Mean stats for Canadians matriculating at US schools: MCAT 33.4+/- 3.5, cGPA 3.74 +/- .22, BCPM GPA 3.75 +/-.23

2010 Mean stats for all other internationals who matriculated:
MCAT 33.0 +/- 4.2, cGPA 3.76 +/-.18, BCPM GPA 3.74 +/- .26

2010 Mean stats for all matriculants:
MCAT 31.1 +/- 4.1, cGPA 3.67 +/- .26, BCPM GPA 3.61 +/- .32

Like some other applicants, you have average stats, and it is late in the cycle. However, you are also Canadian. Therefore... work hard and don't give up hope! Because it ain't gonna come easy.

I'm still going to apply to a few schools with a Nov 1st deadline and see if I can squeeze my way in. Does it count if I love it in the States?! haha

Why don't you marry somebody here and get a citizenship pronto?

Or you could just apply to those cutthroat Canadian schools..

As a Canadian with those stats applying this late like everyone said hmm it's going to be hard, VERY HARD.

I have already applied to 10 Canadian schools but our deadlines just passed, hence the lateness of applying to American Schools.

Have a sister?

What's another couple hundred bucks? I mean would my chances improve that much if I had been early? It would have still been hard to get my application noticed.

I think your best yield for time spent now would be studying religiously for the MCAT while continuing EC's.

I think it would help a lot if you scored closer to the average for Canadians accepted to US schools.

If I don't matriculate this year at a Canadian school, I guess I will be considering a re-write. Thanks for the advice.

Sorry for restarting this old thread but, I figured it would be better to post new updates to this thread instead of starting a new one.

I am retaking the MCAT on August 3rd 2012. My old score was a 30S (10P, 11B 9V). When I apply this year in June and I mark that I am taking the MCAT in August, will schools be using my old MCAT scores until my new ones come in to evaluate my application?

Secondly, will I receive secondaries based on my old school throughout the summer or will my application remain incomplete until my scores come in in September and therefore, be sent secondaries later in the cycle?

Thanks in advance.

I'm glad you bumped up your old thread.

1) Schools will hold your application for consideration until the new score comes out.

2) Many schools send Secondaries to everyone before they look at the application to see if everything is present. Some wait until your application is complete. And some actually look at the application first and only send a Secondary if they are interested in you.

Does this mean my application will be considered "late"?
