Hello. I just finished my DO AACOMAS, but I applied for AMCAS in mid Sept. And i know that is pretty late for MDs. I graduated with a B.S/M.S combined degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology during early Sept. My uGPA is around 3.4 my graduate gpa is 3.68. But the science are only 3.2 for under and 3.3 for grad. Most of my junior, senior and graduate core courses are considered to be med or pharmacy courses. Tragically, I took my MCAT the same time I was writing my thesis, so I scored a 25N. I admit I wasn't prepare enough for it. so... well I bombed it bad.

What I want to know is: Will I be competitive for DO school? and what about MD school? And which MDs should I try for? I did applied to several newly opened MDs schools.

Very competetive for DO, poor for MD

-uGPA is around 3.4
-graduate gpa is 3.68.

-MCAT 25N.

Med schools are interested in more than numbers, and you have provided no detail about your ECs. But on the surface at least, you would not appear to be a competitive candidate for MD schools. A later application would put you at an even more severe disadvantage.

Well. I have tons with ECs.

Volunteer: I did from junior year of highschool to senior year of college (every summer), worked in multiple departments. I worked in supplies, ICU, Recovery, and regular care unit. Have somewhere around 600 hours.

Shadowing and Clinical exposure: Shadowed a pediatrician (MD) for 2 summers. Have around maybe 120 hours. But I also interacted with patients while I was shadowing. I also have an EMT license, and around 10 hours shadowing in the ER.

Research: Had some research experience from my undergrad years in a chemistry lab. Then worked as an assistant for the assistant dean of bio-medical science in one summer. After that, I went to my master research.

Other ECs: I play intramural soccer every semester while I was in school. I worked as a mentor, guided and helped a freshman fitting in both socially and academically in college. I was a TA for Cell Biology. Last, I was an RA for one year (resident advisor) while I was in my first year as a master student.

You hit the dot, that is the problem... I didn't shadow a DO nor do I have a LOR from a DO. I did not know a DO letter is preferred for DO school until this summer. By then I was bugged down with MCAT and my thesis defense. So I didn't bother to get one. I hope that won't cut me off from most DO school. I did get some secondaries today, LECOM stated that it requires DO LOR. So, I do not what to do at the moment besides filling out every secondary first.... 🙁

Not all require one. Some will take an MD letter and some don't need one at all. But even where not required, it's a good idea to do it before your interview so you can speak knowledgeably about DO focus. So pull out your phone book and make cold calls. Or contact the state AOA and ask for a DO mentor in your area.

Thank you for your reply. One last question tho. I am still going to finish applying for the current cycle. But if everything fails, would a MCAT around a 33ish be ideal for me for MD and DO for next year's cycle? Would my cgpa and sgpa be enough for state MD schools if i bring up my MCAT score? For the past few days, I been thinking maybe I should go to Kaplan and jack my MCAT grades up.
