So im a 2nd semester junior (Bio/Psych double major) at a State school, and i just took the MCAT for the first time and got a PS10 VS7 BS10 (27P)

I have a 3.28 GPA as of right now and am on my way to having a 3.39 at the end of the semester before applying. (I started off rough with a 2.7 freshman yr first semester and have had an upward trend across the board since then hitting 3.5 my past two semesters which brought me to the current 3.28)

As for ECs:
~I have been a volunteer EMT for a few years (still volunteering)
~Worked for a year in a Psych Lab (still working there)
~Traveled abroad for a mission trip
~Shadowed an MD
~shadowed a DO
~Spent 2 years (200+ hours) volunteering at a hospital
~Member of Med Vol. Club at my University

My main issue is my MCAT, im upset about my VS7, it was rly unexpected because i never got below a 9 on my practice tests but even on the exam i could tell it was a killer. So I want to kno what do you think about my MCAT and my chances for both DO and MD schools, i like NYCOM and UMDNJ-SOM for DO and UMDNJ-RWJ for MD.

Opinions please?

🙁

Ok, I'll weigh in on the DO side of the house. First, did you do any retakes that may help raise your GPA when it comes to filling out the AACOMAS (Medical Schools will still look at grades for both classes, but this might help ease some concerns about GPA). Second, continue doing what you are doing for E.C.s and start thinking about the quality of the experience and how that experience will help answer some questions in the future from ADCOMs as well as your personal statement. Third, good luck with applying and you have a decent shot at convincing schools to accept you based on everything compiled together. I can't really answer for the allopathic programs, but perhaps someone else can.

I havent explored the retake option, i was thinking about it but im alrdy a junior and so any retake that would actually impact my application would mean i stay for another year and apply as a senior with a gap yr.

I did take similar courses and did much better later on in my school career, after Cs my first yr in chem i got As in Orgo and am on my way to an A in Biochem. things along those lines.

If it helps im in NJ so im in state for UMDNJ and really close to NY for those schools.

You seem like you are certainly on the right track... keep your grades improving and I'd imagine you'll be in good shape. I had a 3.7GPA with a 27R on the MCAT along with 5 years of EMT experience and some research (1 paper published) and I was accepted at both UMDNJ-SOM and NYCOM. I currently attend NYCOM and am very happy here. Unfortunately I think that with your MCAT score and GPA UMDNJ-RWJ would be a reach (it definitely was for me anyway), but perhaps someone on the MD side could chime in.

Keep working hard, it will pay off!

Best of luck!

So im a 2nd semester junior (Bio/Psych double major with a nutrition minor) at a highly accredited State school, and i just took the MCAT for the first time and got a PS10 VS7 BS10 (27P)

My main issue is my MCAT, obv. im upset about my VS7, it was rly unexpected because i never got below a 9 on my practice tests but even on the exam i could tell it was a killer- id retake it, but my issue is i was use to 9s on PS and BS on my practices, the 10s were only on occasion and never together so my total score even if i retake and get the 9 in VS will prob still be around a 27. So I want to kno what do you think about my MCAT and my chances for both DO and MD schools, i like NYCOM and UMDNJ-SOM for DO and NYU, Mt Sinai, and UMDNJ-RWJ for MD.

Opinions please?

Chances at an MD acceptance were below 30% for All Applicants in the past few years with a 3.39/27. A low VS is likely to be an additional negative predictor. Those that succeeded may have had special circumstances, like exmilitary, member of a special population group, or SMP.

Do you think the 7 will cause an autoscreen from any of the schools i listed? Also if i retake the MCAT and get a 9 9 9 do you think that will be better or worse, considering 2 scores went down but now they are about even?

NYU and Mt Sinai are very selective schools, so it wouldn't surprise me if they did. Why not call and ask them or check the website to see if there are posted guidelines.

IMO. the 9/9/9 would be preferred by many MD institutions.
