I know you get a lot of these, but I just want some opinions if it is worth me applying or not.

I have a 3.55 cGPA, 3.1 sGPA, haven't taken the DAT yet, but I will study for about 45 days once school is out and based on practice tests and this studying I should get a 19 or higher. I completed an SMDEP in dentistry, I have shadowing hours, limited volunteerism. My science GPA is low because I got two C+'s in Orgo I and II. Since then I have taken Analtyical Chemistry (A) and Biochemistry (in progress, project: B+) as science classes, and all my other requirements have been nothing lower than B+. I did a summer of organic chemistry research.

I know my GPA is huge drawback, but will a high DAT and the SMDEP experience save me to at least get some interviews? Or should I think about another field?

Thanks, I know you guys get these a lot, but i really appreciate it!

Just to clarify, I did an SMDEP, but I'm still a white male. I'm a first generational college student, but I don't think d-schools take that into consideration, do they?

SMDEP, research, volunteering etc help BUT they dont help you as much as you think. They are there to make you stand out from other 3000 apps but at the end of the day, your stats will decide whether you get a seat in dental school or not. Don't focus too much on those ECs and forget to raise your GPA or kill the DAT.

Just do well on your DAT. For a 3.1 sGPA, i would say 21 DAT.

Good luck.

I think it helps immensely to have done SMDEP. There is a reason why you were admitted into SMDEP and dental schools know that. It's a very competitive program to get into and congratulations on that. You'll probably have a higher chance of getting into the school that you attended for SMDEP. In regards to your GPA, it's fine. Trust me. It's not the end of the world. Kill the orgo section on the DAT and your orgo grades will vanish into thin air, trust me. Maintain your GPA and do well on the DAT. That should be your main focus
