No offense, Dentaldream, but I think it sounds totally pathetic when people use terms like "dental medicine" or say they are going to be "dental doctors." Yes, technically it's correct; it just sounds too much like the chiropractors with their inferiority complex who feel the need to call themselves "chiropractic physicians."

We are entering the field of dentistry and are going to be dentists. Be proud of that fact and don't worry about dressing it up to remind everybody that yes, dentists are doctors, too. We are going to be in the enviable position of enjoying our jobs and making a load of money in the process. What other people think about your job shouldn't mean squat. You're the one who has to do it day in and day out, not them. 😀
Speak for yourself, I'm going to wear a long white coat, with my name embroidered in gold with DDS at the end, to work (just like those Crest commercials), carry a giant toothbrush in my pocket half way out so everyone sees it, and refer to myself as Dr. Feelgood DDS/DMD when I make dinner reservations. On top of that, when I want something from the assistants, Imma gonna yell out, "Stat!!!":hardy:

True, now that I think about it, I agree. The embossment of "dentist" as "doctor of dental medicine" is not worth the extra breaths. The bottom line at the end of the day is "are you enjoying your daily work?" A job gets us bread on the table- but if we happen to enjoy doing it and continually improving it we shall lead an even more fulfilling life.

It helps to know that dentistry has a long and proud history, and a bright and secure future. To work hard to join and perpetuate such a future is truly a privilege. Keep the "yuk" reaction comments coming though!... they're still amusing! and motivational!

I fullly agree.

Of course, if this lately knew even the first thing about dentistry as a profession, she'd already know that the majority of dentists own their practices, and so are small business owners in addition to clinicians. 😉

Again I ask... where do you guys get this?? I have never experienced any of this negative response when I tell people I'm going into dental medicine. .

Same experience here too. People always say " wow... you gonna be a dentist ? Great profession... Am I gonna be your first patient ? " I got all positive responses all the time even from doctors, nurses, managers, coworkers at my hospital. Where are you folks living at anyway ?

sorry Dream...but am gonna have to second this..its kinda sad!

Not only have I received negative responses from almost everyone I tell, aside from my family, but also from many dentists.

They say things like, wow, if I had to do it all again, I would seriously reconsider.

Or Are you sure you want to do this?
This is what the dentist that I current assist for says to me all the time.

Other dentists have said that they were seriously disappointed with the amount of money they were earning after school.
They felt mislead and that the avg. salary is not 150,000 like most schools tell you.

Does everyone see or know something we are all missing?

Realistically, you will be looking to make somewhere between $75,000-$110,000 right after you graduate if you go into an associateship immediately. At the same time, roughly one third of that money is going to Uncle Sam as income tax, and you also have to bear the burden of your student loans for a few years.

Dentistry is not going to make you rich overnight. So if money is your prime motivation, best choose a different career like investment banking or something. 😀

That said, I've encountered responses all across the spectrum, from those dentists who are enthusiastic about the profession to those who are unhappy about their career choice because their heart is not in dentistry. Changing careers is expensive and time-consuming, so be sure to know what you are getting into and do it right on the first go.

HTH.

Umm, I don't think the schools meant fresh grads would make $150K on average. I've attached what I scanned from the ADA card about debt and salary.

I know, it's hard to read, but there's a max size SDN allows.

No offense taken.

I was kinda half-kidding. I dont going around telling people that I'm going into dental medicine (even though my school is called Tufts School of Dental Med). I just tell people I'm going into dentistry and dont get any back lash for it. Nor should I.
