what are pre-med class averages usually?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
totally depends on the class and if it's a required course or not.

physiology isn't required as a pre-med student at my school, and the test average is usually in the 50s-60s. the course usually gets curved to 70-75 average. other classes like immunology, which most pre-meds take, get exam averages approaching 80.

My pre-med class had quite a high average in the beer chug.
 My friend who's in the Biochem Honors program said there was a Facebook poll at his school, and 90% of biochem majors are virgins compared to 30% of Arts and Social Sciences.

(Cough)...and...um...what school is this that I can find all of these vir...I mean students?

If you're talking about Pre-med courses, I can give you an idea what class averages were like when I took them.

Gen Chem: ~50-60. However, this is mostly because you have at least 3/4 freshman from non pre-med majors who just need this for general education and couldn't care less whether or not they get an A, as long as they pass.

Physics: ~60

Organic Chem: ~60

Gen Biology: ~70

You'll see an increase in averages when you get up into 400-level biochemistry courses, because they tend to have a more concentrated population of anal-retentive pre-meds who put in the hours needed to get that A. So far in my Biochem 401 course, the average seems to be around a 75.

Our test averages were, Gen Chem-55
Bio-60
Cell bio-55
Orgo-60
Physics-70-75
micro-65

4.0 j/k 😉

I think is around 2.5~3.0ish

You also have to take into account, alot of the ppl that start out premed, have no business being there, so they bring the averages way down, thats why classes like Gen Chem and Basic bio, usually have alot lower aaverages than the upper classes.

bio- 65's
gchem-70's
ochem-45's
physic-60's
math- 75's

This is pretty much what I've seen although general chem averages were a lot lower. O-chem scores are traditionally horrendous (all through o-chem I the range was consistently 5-100+ and avg was 40.) The physics exams have also seemed to be lower, more in the 55ish range.

They vary a lot by class & professor...the avg for our anatomy practical this week was 80 which was really good b/c it was pretty hard. By contrast, the avg for my organic chem 2 final was 53.

I dunno why these classes can't just be easy. The world would be at peace, and students all over the nation would rejoice in happiness. Everyone would be peachy.

Then again we would probably have crappy healthcare.

Tests on my intro physics ranged from 2%-100%.....I fell somewhere in the middle of that spectrum.

gotta weed out the people who aren't serious about it. if it was easy, everyone would be pre-med.

Physics: Median grade is in the 80's and the curve is set to a B (basically straight curved)

GChem: Median was around 75 and curve was set to a C (straight curved but it was a little harsh)

Ochem: set ranges (need over 85% for A-)

Bio: Median is usually 69% (variable) Curve is set to C

btw this is info for ucla. the info is highly variable, but based on personal experience.

well dang i should have went there

whoa whoa whoa...how are these premed avgs sooo low, when md app profiles have kids who have mostly 3.5 plus GPAs

Realize that most people who claim to be "pre-med" will never get around to applying (we're talking maybe 90% here).

And those that didn't too hot in undergrad but decide to pursue med school later usually pick those tougher courses to prove themselves, but there aren't too many of them anyway.

Because class averages are based on all the students in the class. MD APP profiles reflect students who went on to apply and felt like posting their profiles on a public board.

Grade avgs in Bio I were lower than Bio II. In Chem I they were slightly higher than Chem II. There were a decent # of drops in Bio I and Chem II. So the avgs got higher as the semesters wore on. The highest avgs, by far, have been in Phys I - right around a high "B", but the capabilities of students in the class is noticeably higher.
