I'm wondering about what type of "people" problems others have encountered during third year - whether it was with students, residents, nurses? Any interesting stories about dealing with a difficult classmate, etc? I'm curious about what people have faced and specifically how they have handled it. It kind of makes you feel better to know you aren't the only one dealing with irritating situations👎

B*tchy, abusive female OB/Gyn intern -----------> Punch in the ovaries.

hahaha right in the baby maker.

Scrub nurses are a big problem of mine at the hospital I am at right now. I think I have met maybe two that A) smiled, B) didn't make snide comments behind your back or C) didn't have a stick shoved firmly up their own asses. I solved this by being sickeningly nice to them and doing everything to help them. In the end, they are made out to be total a-holes while I still look good. That and I am leaving the hell hole in 8 days while they will be there for years..and years...and years to come....joy to the worldddddddd.

you hear so many stories about scrub nurses, can't wait to experience it myself, so much to look forward to🙄

The scrub nurses and techs I've dealt with so far have been super friendly, so don't go in expecting them to suck. They might, but it's not a guarantee. Just check your ego at the door (as a 3rd year student, you don't know more than them about OR procedures), and you'll probably be OK.

I second Dr. Bagel. It's easy to realize that you may know more about some aspect of pathophysiology in a case you're scrubbed into. That's part of your training. But you should realize that most scrub nurses have been doing their job for years and years and know most of the intimate details of the procedures, and have also probably seen what happens when things go wrong and know what needs to be done to fix it. Don't EVER try to act like you know more than them, even if it seems painfully obvious to you, because it will make your life harder and certainly not engender any respect from them.

So much of third year is spent learning from the ancillary staff who don't have MDs but who have a ton to offer. I learned blood gases stone cold, not from a pulmonologist, or even my medicine attending, but from a respiratory therapist who was really into his job and enjoyed explaining things if you would actually listen to him. A lot of med students see the RT and assume they have nothing to offer because they're not MDs.
