What are some skills, both professional or not, that would be useful to obtain before med school?

Before I'm attacked with a slew of sarcastic replies, I'm seriously asking for advice LOL.

I want to use these next 7 months or so to build on some life skills. I'm thinking of learning how to cook more and possibly learning how to use R, since I've heard that's a useful skill to have for research labs in med school. Do you guys have any other recommendations?

Develop some good health habits. Get dental issues taken care of now to avoid problems cropping up at the worst possible moment during the school year. Spanish language skills. A hobby you can pick up and put down for the moments when you need some time to unwind.

Learn to type quickly and accurately if you're not great at it now. I was kicking myself a lot during first year for running out of time while writing SOAP notes.

You asked a very good question, so no snark here.

Work in a service job.

If you've already got one, learn mindfulness and other self-care techniques.

Cooking skills are always good. Get an instapot.

Take opportunities to get out of your comfort zone, challenge yourself, and readily accept feedback from these events if offered. Medical training inevitably involves a lot of "first" experiences that are uncomfortable. The better you get at charging ahead and incorporating feedback afterward despite these feelings, the easier it becomes to quell the anxiety and not let nerves hold you back. Learn to be proactive asking for feedback and supervision vs. avoiding it or waiting until someone really wants to offer it to you. In my opinion.
