I’ve used the search feature on here and I’ve read enough to know that not one single program can be considered “best” and that “the program you get into is the best program in the country.”

But what are some of the more well-respected OMFS programs in the country and what sets them apart?

Thanks in advance.

I’ve read enough

I recommend you read more.

There are different programs for people with different goals in their own lives. After you dig up some more, you'll have an idea of what programs are generally known for. Once you have an idea, the best way to find out is to extern.

The most "well-respected" program is the one you get into.

I understand that, but there has to be a difference between programs. Just a few days ago on this board I read about BU and Harlem OMS and how there is some not-so-nice-things being said about them.

Overall:

Parkland, LSU NOLA, LSU Shreveport, Oregon, UoM, Lima Linda, USC, Mayo....realistically, whichever one you get into.

Thanks for the answer! What do you think sets these programs apart that make people “respect” them more?

Let me start off by saying that there is no best program. People want different things out of such a broad field - it really is the program you match at.

If you do a search of the most WELL KNOWN programs on SDN from threads throughout the last 20 years. You will notice a few names populating all of these lists and these names are constantly repeated. LSU Shreveport, LSU New Orleans, UAB (Alabama), Parkland, UF Jacksonville, OHSU (Oregon).

These programs are some of the most well known and respected programs in the country. Partly due to faculty, partly to due to their rich histories and contributions to the field of OMFS, and partly due to the wide scope of training they offer.

LSU Shreveport - Known for doing everything known to OMFS - (Dr. Ghali is well known for head and neck and has his own section in Peterson’s)

LSU New Orleans - Known for its unbelievably abundant trauma as well as it’s expanded scope - this program is the avatar of cowboy surgery.

UAB (Alabama) - the program that started the MD complex back in the 1960s and also known for doing everything known to OMFS (Dr. Waite is known for cosmetics/craniofacial and writes the entire section in Peterson’s)

Parkland - this program has produced numerous well known academic faculty - some pretty big names. Also known for its expanded scope (Dr. Ghali, Dr. Sinn, Dr. Turvey trained here)

UF Jacksonville - known for its cancer program and craniofacial. (Dr. Fernandes is a boss and very skilled at head and neck surgery).

OHSU (Oregon) - known for its cancer program which is staffed by the most talented head and neck surgeons in the country due to the number of past dual ENT/OMFS or PRS/OMFS faculty. (Dr. Dierks is dual ENT/OMFS and has helped advanced the field)

I don’t particularly like threads like this because it suggests that other programs aren’t as good. I think every program will train you to be a capable oral surgeon. I felt like every program I interviewed at was so different and fit different personalities and what people were looking for.

Programs that I have heard high praise from attendings that just graduated to attendings that have been in practice for 30 years include Shreveport, UAB, Parkland, New Orleans. I’ve also heard San Antonio praised before.

Yeah, I think you might be asking the wrong question. It's not like there's a "best" school to get into. There are programs which focus on different things. So if you wanted to get more into Head and Neck Oncology, there are some programs which are more strong in that field (OHSU, Mayo) whereas others are more geared towards Trauma (Kings County I believe is still Trauma heavy) and so on.
