what are weekends like

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Go out as much as you can. I went out every weekend, and on weekdays if there were no exams. You should know how much time you need to study to perform by this stage in your career.

Never let school interfere with your education- Mark Twain

We usually have Monday tests, so I have been going out one weekend, cramming the next, partying Monday night.

For a lot of folks, it seems to be weeknights OR weekends. Meaning, if you kill yourself during the week, you can have a pretty flexible weekend. I tend to hit the books not too hard during the week, but the cost is about 1 to 1-1/2 days of weekend studying.

Take it all with a grain of salt. There are real sharp blades out there who can skate by on minimal study and those who have to really study hard to get by. I'm probably closer to the latter than the former.

lately i've been having one weekend where i do no work at all (if my exam is on a friday), the next weekend i'll do maybe a few hours of work (this weekend i went out thurs, fri, and sat nights), and the third weekend i'm probably studying a lot (maybe going out one night). then the cycle begins again. during the week i usually don't work too hard. i prefer to do the majority of my studying the week before the exam, but everyone has their own style.

do you do tons of work? ever have time to go out at night on fridays and have other time to chill ?

Keep in mind you get out what you put in. Everything else will follow suite, and you will find your own groove as time progresses. Give it all you've got, and things will be relatively stress-free, and you'll end up earning time to do other things that are not school-related for balance.

For a lot of med students, you can blow off the weekend immediately after an exam, but in general the weekend is going to be the largest unbroken block of time during which you can lock down the prior week's material. Especially so since it's the only two days a week when you don't have new material to learn. So it's optimal review time. Lots of people work during both days and maybe go out Friday and Saturday night, or maybe catch a football game on Sunday. The weekend or two before exams you won't be going out.
Basically it's the opposite of college where many of us squeezed in a few hours of studying in two days of fun and drinking. In med school you squeeze in a few hours of fun in two days of studying most times. And you will rarely cut loose the way you used to in college -- you have to get up early, sober, the next day to hit the books. So plan to cut loose the weekends after exams, and be a bit more focused the other 3 weekends a month.
Obviously everyone's perspective is going to vary based on their school, schedule, abilities, goals, and so on.

When people cheer about "YEAH IT'S FRIDAY NIGHT." My response inside is "It doesn't mean anything to me."

The good thing about weekends is not that you don't have to work. It's school stops so you can catch up or overstudy.

Sad, but I'm sure this is medical school.

I usually don't study at night, so my Friday/Saturday nights are available (usually ends up being date night with the wife), but I definitely study all day Saturday, and sometimes all day Sunday (if I skip church).

👍
Especially true if you have a curriculum that crams a lot of classes into one semester.

Moved to pre-allo as this is a pre-med issue. Allopathic medical students can follow and reply if desired.

That's what's awesome about Emory..all exams and quizzes are on Fridays. The med students said they can just go out and chill all Friday and Saturday.
