What are your plans for this 2013 summer? Classes? Camps? Jobs? Travel?

I'm taking precalc so I can get into calc or AP calc next school year + traveling to Maine with family.

I'm going to California for 2 months and volunteering there....🙂

might take a class at the local CC and volunteer + (hopefully) a job. That's as relaxed as I really get lol

I'm doing the Harvard Summer School program and I'll dorm on campus from June to mid August. 🙂

Studying finance.

Oh....and OH MY GOD! That is so freaking amazing! That is so cool!!!!! (You have to tell me all about it 🙂 )

Studying finance.

One of my most favorite subjects. 🙂
Is finance a new summer course? Or is it under economics? I didn't see it last year.

p.s. Do you know what you will be studying? I'm more interested in mathematical finance than any other field of finance.

I wanted to do something for the summer that was in a university setting. I was accepted by the UCLA Summer Program and the Harvard Program and I chose Harvard because I like the feel and personally i'm not a hot weather person and Cambridge in the summer is just right 🙂

It's under a subset of economics.

I dont know exactly what i'll be studying.... I still haven't received any form of schedule yet.

My GPA sucks but the thing that got me in were experiments and EC's that were very interesting to the people accepting the high schoolers into the program.

I'm going to Thailand for an internship under the Country Rep of UNICEF there. After that, working on applications. Really excited about the applications as well (This is my second Gap Year)

I've got a plethora of ideas, so i'll list them (Numbered from most wanted to least)

- Get accepted into a Paid Research Opportunity :xf: 🙂 :xf:
- Take some College Courses at my CC to get some College Credit in
- Get some more shadowing in
- Get a Job

Physics and accounting.

I'll be going to Spain to see a friend who was an exchange student at my HS. Always nice to have a friend in Europe.

That's awesome! Do you speak Spanish?

A little. My friend is actually Basque however. The basque-land is in N. Spain. Pamplona (running of the bulls) is up there, and the white shirt/red scarf outfit those nuts wear is actually a traditional basque outfit. Oh, and if you haven't had basque chorizo, then you haven't had chorizo (sorry mexico).

I'm relaxing and will begin a research project later in the summer at the college I'm attending.

DevPenguin, are you thinking of majoring in Actuarial Mathematics?

Arijos, NECorner, and pkteen--tell us your experiences by summer's end. 🙂

It all depends, my summers are really weird.

Okay, so I applied to the NCI (National Cancer Institute) internship program and the results come in April 2 - 5 so I'm really stressing. The students go through a summer safety training course and you start interning a post-doc. Then during Senior year, it's more independent and you are assigned a research project and you perform your own research. I really hope I get it because you can only take two classes during Senior year!

If I don't get it, I'm probably going to become a camp counselor at a day camp that's a week long and intern at the coolest vet hospital that I interned last year.

Not sure. ><
Right now I'm more interested in pure mathematics. I'm doing a research project with my cousin and a mentor right now on algorithms, probability theory, and stochastic analysis. I'm working as an intern at an investment bank branch though.

Developing an app, gym and friends. Let see how it goes.

I want to have fun before all my friends go across the country to different colleges, and I'm thinking of getting EMT certified? Maybe?

I thought about it too, but I chose to volunteer instead. Maybe the summer before college I will go EMT.

Uhh sleep, sleep, some more sleep, sleep, maybe more sleep and FOOD. Sounds pretty fun actually!

Buncha you guys doin some pretty cool things this summer, goodluck on gettin a job tolbert. I'm tryin to get one too lol. My summer is pretty much just going to be, if everything goes accordingly, eat, work, gym, volunteer, sleep. repeat.

What I find amazing is that I live in one of the most abundant research areas in America, and STILL can't get any research opportunities 👎

You're in high school... don't worry about it. In high school the good research programs are generally reserved for minorities or disadvantaged students. It will get better in college.

That's true, but I love to do organized research. It's sort of...a hobby 😀

Plus, I don't have a lot of EC's at the moment, and i feel that would help me in the long run.

I should probably go to the gym more.

I should probably go to the gym. I've never gone to a gym in my life. I did workout stuff in middle school PE, but beyond that not much. I also played sports which required some organized working out.

Graduating this year and attending University of Tampa in the fall. Going up to Detroit, Michigan and Canada area to visit family and where my mothers side of the family is from. Then relaxing for the first half of the summer by the Florida beaches (where i live). Then onto work and schooling in the fall in downtown Tampa! I'm excited

I'm applying to a bunch of schools in FL. I was born there.

Where in Canada are you going to be heading?

I would first try to find some volunteer opportunities or maybe shadowing. I would also travel more into Long Island and go upstate a bit to go road cycling.

Scratch the NCI internship of the list, because I found out today that I didn't get accepted. I'm pretty depressed about it because you gain TONS of research experience and it was something I wanted to do ever since 9th grade. This isn't the only one I applied to, but both are pretty prestigious, my chances are slim to none. They accepted all the really smart students...so yeah.

Don't feel too bad. It's tough getting research experience as a High school student

It probably won't make you feel better, but I got rejected from 4 Research Institutes I applied too. 2 of them were paid, 1 would've landed me over 200+ Hours of research experience, and the other one was pretty prestigious (RTP). And that was all this year!

I'm just going to brush it off my shoulders, i'd rather intern at a vet hospital again anyway 😛

👍

Do that.

Getting research experience as a high school student is nearly impossible unless you are a disadvantaged student or a minority. Save research for college.

I'm taking French 2 because they decided due to budget and low demand of the class that they wouldn't offer it during the school year.
I'm also having 4 wisdom teeth pulled, ugh, I'm so scared. Ugggggggh.

Ahahahhahah! You're kidding, right?
I guess it depends on your definition of disadvantaged student, but generally it is defined as a student with a physical or mental disability or lacking financially.

Ok, lets just put you in this situation of lack of money. You have no healthcare, you're sick? You go to school and try to fight it off because there is nothing you can do about. You may be bullied for your clothes or your teeth that you can't fix because you have no HEALTHCARE. This alone can lead to anxiety, depression, and low self esteem, to name a few. Okay, I'm getting too personal with this.

Anyway, money can get you into a lot of things. Research programs, people to people, and summer programs all cost money. I don't have the money to do these things that could give me an advantage when applying to colleges. I know you guys are going to say that there is financial aid for these things, but financial aid almost never covers the bill enough to be affordable.
