Hey GUYS!

For those of you who have gotten into dental school, what are you planning on doing this summer? Some people have told me that this is your last free summer in 4 years, so make sure to travel and do something really fun. Others, like my parents, are saying this is the last chance to buckle down, work, and make some money for dental school. What do you guys think?

Let's say you make 5000 this summer. And your dental school costs 150k. The fees on the loans alone is 1.5k. If you have to move a significant distance, there goes at least 300. Your apartment rent+deposit, there goes another 1000. And you're a little bit stressed/not relaxed going into school. On top of all that, you'll be listening to how your classmates went on some amazing vacation.

I would go on vacation on a loan from a family member and promise them double that value in dental care.

vacation. you have 4 years to work. i plan on relaxin as much as possible before the big race.

I thought about working, but I think I'll end up quiting my job and instead:

-go to the beach/Cape Cod a lot
-golf as much as I can
-apartment hunt/move to boston for dental school
-take some weekend trips with family/friends (Quebec, NYC, camping, etc)
-and finally: go to Disney World/The Wizarding World of Harry Potter!!!!!!

And no, my parents won't be financing these plans. I think that draining my small savings account is worth it in the end after all these years of hard work (in both school and jobs) to get into dental school.

I'm quitting my job in June so I can have some time for myself before going to school in August.

I say everyone should quit their jobs/get back from vacation AT LEAST 3 weeks-month before school. Move in as early as you can. Learn the lay of the land, make some friends, plan a route to school every day, etc.

Over the summer, I plan on killing it at my job. I have HPSP but savings is savings. It's the difference between an Ipad and using slow 3G on my phone.

Go back to my country for 3 weeks and volunteer there for an additional 2 weeks... At least thats my plan.

I really wanna go on a vacation but all my friends are busy/broke(or probably don't wanna go with me). not sure if I should go alone. Wouldn't even know where to go...that's how uncreative I am. Something tells me, this is my only time to treat myself.

Any ideas/websites appreciated

I'll be going to the beach, playing ball, playing vid games, and hanging out with the dudes. Last summer where we'll be together 🙁. Everyone growing up and doing their own thing. I'm a big boy now. I can do this! 😛

Once you enter D-school, the responsibilities will keep piling up. After D-school, you got work. Also, You'll have your wife and kids to take care of sometime in D-school or while working. Think of it as your last summer to be a care-free kid.

Save up some money, buy a new project car. Quite job. Dump money into said project car. Go on vacation to somewhere hot and tropical. Move to new city about 2 weeks before school. Play video games, watch movies and invite new fellow classmates over for BBQ for a pre-orientation get together. 👍

dont know about you guys but i plan to be working my ass off. those numbers are petrifying i'd feel like **** if i were just chillin before dental school :scared:

The problem is that working your ass off just before dental school wont even make a small dent in your loans... usually at least lol

true and it's just gonna wear you out and make you more tired and less ready for the rigors of d-school.

how do you guys deal with being so calm about loans lol.. im dying. if i traveled / did other fun stuff over the summer i'd feel so guilty

I plan on getting a bit crazy at some concerts and hopefully going somewhere tropical.
Corona's all around 👍

wzhu, I'm worried about the loans too. In undergrad I always worked like crazy during the summer, but that's because I could essentially save up enough to live off of for the year (thanks to scholarships and grants that paid for most of my expenses).

The way I see it now though, I could work all summer, not have much fun, and maybe save up about $4000. If I end up taking out loans (if I don't get HPSP), then I'll have 400K+ in loans when I graduate. My payments will be about $4,500/month for 15 years.

So, that $4,000 I could save by working this summer would theoretically allow me to pay off my loans in 179 months instead of 180 months. Is that worth it to you?

i know that's sensible but i can't help but think short term like if i just sacrifice the summer i'll have enough to maybe cover the year's instrument fees.
NOLA are you going to BU? i'm looking at housing in boston too

I understand where you're coming from. I'm always trying to save money and be frugal, but I figured for one time in my life I'll just relax and enjoy the summer without worrying about money.

I certainly will try to live frugally in dental school and avoid senseless spending though. I feel like overspending on things like rent takes a much bigger toll on the student loans in the long run, as opposed to not working for the summer before school starts.

I am moving to Boston, but I'm going to Tufts!

lol... i kinda already counted interviewing "traveling to the US"
but i didn't get to do anything 🙁

I'm absolutely terrified of the debt, and I wish I would have applied for HPSP, but I agree with everyone's sentiments that working your ass of all summer won't be worth the trouble.

I'm traveling and plan to enjoy myself. Making a few extra thousand wont make or break your loans. Plus I'm not worried about it because it is what it is. And its really not that big of a deal.

You had bad tour guys, thats why... 😀

I feel the same.

I might do some research in the beginning of the summer and then travel. I might try Bonaroo since some of my friends are already going.

Those scholarships have their pros and cons...I don't think they work for everyone IMHO

And you can sign up for 3 years if you really regret

That looks sooooo much fun

Thats funny you post this - I'm subscribed to Devinsupertramp's channel haha. Good stuff! Two of his videos are of places that I plan on returning to before D-school starts up. I'm thinking another trip to Kauai, and then a few days up in the enchantments...

Sweeeet. I've been to Hawaii twice but didn't know much so we never left Waikiki. 🙁 but next time for sure to explore!

Btw, here is my summer.
poolside, working, carving/wax-up, lightly reading NBDE part 1, 4 day cruise from LA to Cabo. 👍

Agreed.

UMich starts in early July, so no real summer break for me. I work year round with my job, but I'm giving my 2 weeks once I find out if I head out there earlier. They signed me up for a Merit Fellowship at UMich so if I get it, I actually leave in May. Either way, I have a job and making some decent income so I'm happy. Also get tons of paid vacation and sick leave, so I use that to "fund" my vacations. This year = disneyland!

Right by my hometown!

As for me, I'm heading to Panama at the end of May. UCSF starts the 3rd week of Sept, so I have an extra month of summer I usually don't get. Still thinking of what else to do.

that's awesome. I went to Costa Rica for a humanitarian mission this past December and I had a blast. We cleaned teeth for more than 700 people overall and drank every night haha.

What organization did you do it with?

I'm doing the same except in Pamana. Global Dental Brigades is the organization.
