study for the MCAT

...

I play clarinet, listen to good music, watch YouTube and documentaries with my gf, practice martial arts, namely Aikido and devise various ways to defend myself in different situations because I'm basically Dwight Schrute.

Planning out your AMCAS Works and Activities section eh? 😉 (and also, it's best reserved for the social thread)

With that said, I play the guitar in various and possibly random occasions  Oh and watch northern lights whenever/wherever I can find.

I was just thinking I spend a lot of time on activities for my application and sometimes neglect my own personal interests! I feel like I'm forgetting that investing time in my own interests and hobbies is really okay!

Of course it is! Don't think that it's wrong to make time for yourself. It's just another part of the critical time management skills you'll need later on.

I agree. It's important to follow whatever your interests are. Application activities are usually minimal (clinical exposure, community involvement, and perhaps research and leadership). What makes you stand out and look impressive are the interests you pursue. So investing time in your interests/hobbies are strongly recommended.

I've been playing guitar for 18 years, so I do that almost everyday. It's one of my passions. . . something I do because I must.

I love gardening but am restricted to a few months a year since I live in New York. One day, I will live in a state in which gardening is a year-round activity!

I also love purchasing vintage leather dress shoes on ebay and restoring them to better-than-new condition with my own homegrown recipe of dyes, conditioners, waxes and creams. I don't know anyone else who does this, so I guess it makes me weird, but that's ok.

Saxophone/Piano, listening to movie soundtracks, reading (esp. nonfiction), watching sports (football, basketball, soccer), collecting lapel pins. Oh and posting on the internet (like on SDN)

I like to see how many numbers I can pull in a month.

Gardening. Although I am waging war on butterflies who are eating my Purple Passion Fruit.
The next free day I have I am going rollerblading, saw dolphins hunting fish in the shallow last time I went. I could put my hand out and touch them. Haven't felt relaxed like that in a long time.

Listening to music, studying, working, chilling with my girl friends. That's about it.

Playing my violin
Reading
Running
Archery
Fishing
Horseback riding
Taking care of my small army of pets
Spending time with friends and family

I like going to the gym. What do you all like to do for fun?

What don't I like to do for fun? I'm at the point in my life that I have to do so many things that if I don't find a way to enjoy it, I will go crazy.

My love of reading is the most obvious if you see the mountain of books I own. Having a bookcase collapse on me has been rated as the number 1 most likely cause of my death. Actually I tell a lie, it's number 2. Number 1 is death by partner for bringing another book into the house. (Joke is on you honey, you do not see my kindle books!)

No surprise writing is not far off. I've completed Nanowrimo three times. I will miss doing that in medical school, but I do have to edit the books I already wrote.

I'm an amateur genealogist and I have become very good at digging up the black sheep of the family especially in Surinam. Between my partner's family and my own, I have about a thousand people in my family tree on ancestry. I can't do much left on that unless I go to the country myself.

I have been involved in theater/performing arts for about 30 years and I just retired from medieval reenactment (SCA/ren faire) after almost 18 years. I just stopped enjoying it so I stopped doing it. I, however, am learning how to play the guitar if for no other reason to annoy some people. Note to self: learn to sing off-key. 🙂

To say I am involved in volunteer work might be an understatement of the year. I am very active in the life of my synagogue which is incredibly active in the community. Nearly 1400 member families... every single one of them know me. I'm also very known in the Jewish education circuit because I have taken so many classes so many places. I find it relaxing to listen to the classes.

I also will play Star Trek online. Have a Fed Sci based on Dr Phlox from Enterprise and I have a Reman Tact. When I am very upset, I will use them to blow off steam.

And this is just the stuff I do indoors!

Outside when the weather is nice, observational astronomy ranks high. I like camping even though I have been forced to camp for the past several months. I am an expert in ultra minimal travel which allows me to go on spontaneous trips if I have the time and the money.

If anyone is in need of new hobbies, I suggest reading Richard Horne's "101 things to do before you die" which is something I am working through.

I enjoy laying out new gardens. I plan them, plant them, and care for them. The best part is sitting back and watching them grow just the way I envisioned (mostly).

I also read and collect science fiction books, sew costumes, refinish wood, hike, play killer scrabble, and do crossword puzzles.

Cooking, reading and board wargames. Give me an armored division in the Ardennes, or a Guards Tank Army on the steppes of Russia, and I'm a holy terror.
I have played a bunch of old Avalon hills games my uncle had in a closet. Literally can take months to play these games. Battle of the Bulge is a favorite.

Flying quadcopters in uptown Dallas off rooftops when the bars close.

Other things: alcohol / lakes / grilling / ranches - just your typical Texas life.

Wish I could scuba/sail more.. Maybe I'll get an away rotation in Hawaii or the BVIs.

Playing piano/guitar.
Anime.
Books, ranging from nonfiction to literature to sci-fi to some YA books (my guiltiest pleasure...)
Chess.
Trying to get into Go now, I've become a bit bored with Chess and I hit that wall where it would take tons of work to get even a little better and in the end computers are way better than me anyway so I'm kinda meh about it. Go is pretty fun though. Hard game.
League when my friends are free.

Ahhh I forgot to mention chess... I feel like I'm at the same point. I also recently gave Go a look but I wasn't hooked so I have kinda been ignoring it.

You play on any phone apps?

i don't think it's considered a hobby but i love competing in bodybuilding shows, unfortunately it can only be done like 1x per year :/

Playing guitar and singing (lead singer of a performing band--opened for Chiddy Bang)

Reading: especially science fiction novels (Michael Crichton rules) and fantasy novels with a magic-based system set in a time before technology

Writing music: this goes in hand with #1, but it's somewhat different

Watching LOADS of NBA/NCAA basketball and NCAA Football. GOOOOOO BIG RED!

Playing sports: I was recruited by many colleges to play football, but I turned them all down. Some days I miss the competitive nature, so I head to the local gym and clown some fools in one-on-one.

Not doing anything: I'm a pretty introverted fella (weird for a lead singer of a band right?) and I need alone time. I am at peace sitting down watching TV with my computer in my lap browsing SDN while being alone!

Go or Chess? I used to play on the ICC app on my laptop and on my phone but I don't really log on as much anymore. I play on Chesscube when I do play or at the local club on campus because those guys are so much better than me. Go I have not tried on my phone, I would probably throw it against the wall since the pieces would be so small. Go is a game better played over the table I feel but no one plays it here :c

:claps: Dr. Phlox was awesome.

I've loved him since I heard "If you're going to try to embrace new worlds, you must try to embrace new ideas." At that moment, I knew he was my character for that show.

Not sure what I like most about him, the fact he is the most anthropology-oriented character in ST (which I love as my undergrad was anthropology) or the polyamorous species he is from. Although the zoo in sickbay is pretty awesome too.

I'm embarrassed to say this, but that crazy fictional doctor is one of my medical heroes. I once said if I end up as a physician, I was going to end up just like Phlox so I hope the Interspecies Medical Exchange is ready for me. 😉

The actor popped up in an episode of Scrubs and it drove me crazy that the voice was familiar but I didn't know who it was obviously as he was out of makeup. I recognized him when he smiled near the end of the episode.

Horseback riding is awesome. I would love to be a world-class eventer.... maybe in my next life.

Also reading and writing. A lot.

Playing video games and/or online chess whenever writing block sets in.

...

Oh, I almost forgot. Caring for orphans, feeding the homeless, staffing free clinics in underserved areas, and all that stuff.

Rock climbing, ultimate frisbee, reading, fixing my car/motorcycle. Thinking about trying out dirt bikes, but we'll see what apps do to my budget. 😱 I have tryouts for a competitive frisbee team this week. Last week I hit the climbing gym a ton and nailed an 11.c (which is normally wayyyy outta my league!)

And, when I get the chance, SCUBA, playing my cello, etc!

Singing! I was involved in women's a cappella throughout undergrad, and in high school the musical theatre life was all of my life.

It's so interesting to hear people who like gardening! I've been thinking of growing a couple of herbs and spices, but living in an apartment without a lot of sun light is making me hesitant...

1. I've played guitar 12 years and drums for 8 years. Played in bands in high school and did pep band/jazz band in college. I kind of stopped though because things have been busy with school/work, but I hope to get back on those soon.
2. Listening to a lot of music, but mostly indie/alternative/folk rock, rap/hip hop, and mid-2000's emo/pop punk (best years to be an angsty high schooler!).
3. Watching a lot of NBA/NCAA basketball and get super angry at the TV when the games aren't going how I'd want it to go...
4. Reading graphic novels and comics
5. Listening to NPR and podcasts like This American Life.
6. Video gaming!! My favorites are more story/decision-based or exploration based games like Life is Strange, The Walking Dead by Telltale games, and Kingdom Hearts.
7. Watching Youtube! Though I mostly watch gaming and cooking channels.

This explains everything.

It's kind of sad I stopped doing anything.

All I do is lift and sleep. I don't even play soccer or swim anymore. I've given up painting, religious studies, even my PS4 is collecting dust.

School, research, and volunteering is already too much. Any free time I have, I'll be at the gym or in my bed. If I have a week off, I'd just end up dicking around with my free time -- maybe seeing a movie with friends or chilling with my siblings.

I literally have no hobbies anymore, Idk anyone else feeling like this 🤔

I'm totally in to like 5 of the things you mentioned 😎 Love my drums and guitar, and love the music taste. Also huge NCAA basketball fan, and I couldn't live without videogames or Youtube. Used to do some competitive gaming for a couple years (I'd get laughed out of the forum if I said which games lol) and was actually ranked pretty high regionally and globally for a couple games until I got tired of all the stress and stopped.

Also love disc golf, just got back from a 3 day camping/disc golf road trip actually. Also love running, looking to train for a marathon but I've got a bum knee 😡

I feel like this towards the end of the semester. It's pretty discouraging. Time will never happen for hobbies though. You just have to do it and forego that hour of studying or hw or whatever and live with the consequences. It is tough to balance everything though.

Yeah, I don't have hobbies either. Unless you count compulsive College Confidential and Student Doctor posting as a hobby... And playing with small children in my church's nursery.

The worst part is that I do have the time to do hobbies. But the school I attend has slowly conditioned me to put all my time and energy into studying, working, pre-med things. Now I feel jittery and uncomfortable every time I try to relax, like something bad is going to happen in the future as a consequence of me slacking... :scared:

Really trying to break out of that mindset though... I want to learn to speed-cube, and maybe (maybe) join the club that does fire spinning, lol.

Bowling (the inspiration behind my avatar), watching sports (especially ice hockey, also football, baseball, and more recently basketball), reading sports blogs (especially hockey blogs and Zach Lowe's basketball articles on Grantland), playing Call of Duty, eating, sleeping, hanging out with friends/family
