Any surfers, snowboarders, rock climbers, etc. in the group?

I'm curious to see what types of things the path folks do on their free time. Thx.

Snowboarding, surfing (but not very good yet--I can ride a long board, manage to stay on it and steer, but thats about it), guitar, I don't climb but I like bouldering.

I watch movies, try to read, and listen to lots of music both live and on CD (mostly classical and opera).

I used to ski. Sometimes now my wife and I go for walks. I know, I know, brace yourself, life can get pretty exciting!

Snowboarding is an abomination upon the planet and anyone who snowboards should be given a one way ticket to the moon. Rock climbing is annoying too but it doesn't really get in my way or in my face so I can ignore it more.

Skier, eh? A few of my friends are skiiers and none of them complain that snowboarders have in any way, shape, or form have impacted their enjoyment of skiing (or life in general). How is rock climbing annoying? Unless you actively seek out places where people climb, you won't even see one. BTW, generalizations about a group of people (any) bothers me big time. Its like saying that all people that listen to classical music are uptight elitist pricks 😉

I used to ski....

Snowboarding is an abomination upon the planet

How long ago did you ski? When snowboards first came out they tended to really carve up the slope, but I think they have gotten a lot better...

Not sure what they changes about snowboards...

I like skiing, haven't been very much so I kinda feel like a kamakaze going down the mountain....think I should get that under control before I try snowboarding....!

Went caving recently, lots of fun. Miss rock climbing, haven't been in a while.

Pray tell, how frequently do you have to do it for it to count as a hobby?

I'd say more than 5-6 times a year. Somethings you can only do during certain months of the year, thus limiting the number of times you can actually do it.

Well, I've talked about it before, but I'm a homebrewer... I brew my own beer, 5 gallons at a time. It's a great hobby if you like beer, like to share beer with friends, and have at least a working understanding of basic microbiology - that's not a prerequisite, but it'll help you keep from making a totally nasty beer. I'm designing a stand right now to sort of kick my brewing up a notch, and I just got done wiring up a Johnson Controls A419 temperature controller to run my new fermentation fridge. Woot. 🙂

Other hobbies, well, I like doing things around my house... remodeling, landscaping and the like, in small and measured doses. I used to have a much older house that had a lot of projects, so got a bit burned out on that. I used to scuba dive but haven't had a chance since I started med school.

I've got a wife and a kiddo, so that also takes up a lot of time. I also tend to still squeeze in a little bit of time for the occasional computer game when everyone else is asleep or out of town. Any Civilization 4 addicts in the house? 🙂

It's the weekend, Prost!

I read a lot (mostly fiction about 100+ books a year) since I don't really like TV. I chase my kid around. I play Xbox360 (on the weekends mostly). Being a pathology resident is great.

As sad as this is...

I used to do alot of stuff: rock climbing, running, triathlons, etc. I was active and in pretty decent shape. But for the last 2 years I have basically given up everything I used to do, and just do pathology. I always feel like I should always be studying, and if I start some other activity the guilt kicks in that I should make better use of my time.

I am not advocating this lifestyle (because frankly I am burning out), but I feel like patients deserve the best pathologist that I could possibly be. I can focus on one area of pathology, and another suffers. There is just so much to know...

i started a 6 gallon batch of strawberry riesling wine a week ago.... i still plan on getting a batch of beer going eventually... maybe before i start studying for step1 so I will have something to enjoy afterward.

I'm into art. I paint whenever I have the time. I also play the piano, but I'm not very good. Other hobbies I have are traveling, shopping (what girl doesn't like to shop?), hiking, watching the NY football Giants (hence my name, but unfortunately Tiki's retired) and just spending time with my family and friends.

I also enjoy long walks on the beach. (Sorry, but I just realized my post sounded a little too much like a personal ad.) 😛

I love boogieboarding, fishing, and rock climbing. I just wished I had the time to do these things. Oh well eventually I will.

weight training and watching reality tv shows

Woohoo! I don't own a TV. Read lots. Love murder mysteries, especially of the Agatha Christie variety. Last book was Adrienne Clarkson's "Heart Matters".

I dance. Have been on stage twice since residency started. At one point this past winter we were rehearsing 6 hours a week.

Also visit a certain someone out in Colorado whenever I can, and together we've rafted, camped, spent hours on a motorcycle and visited DC and NYC.

You blow me away. I didn't know the Upper Midwest and the South had so much in common.

When I was younger I was nearly de-brained by snowboarders (on several occasions) with reckless disregard for anyone else. Therefore I hate snowboards. Of course, there are also butthead skiers too. Rock climbing is annoying just because it is. You don't have to agree with me. 😛

I hate generalizations too, except when they're accurate 😉

Skis are bizarre now. All kinds of weird shapes. Don't know why they really had to try to improve on the old ones, except for people who can't ski and want to think they can, of course.

I am actually curious about the original question. Why ask what pathologists do in their spare time? Pathologists do everything in their spare time that people in any other profession do in their spare time. Like every career, there are singers, actors, readers, writers, rock climbers (sigh), tennis players, sportos, motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads, even righteous dudes.

I do not have very exciting hobbies but I enjoy them. NASCAR, college football (especially the Huskers 😀 ), World of Warcraft, reading (fiction, non-fiction, magazines, the whole gamut), news/politics, listening to and collecting music, TV shows like Lost, and following the aurora borealis (I spend a ridiculous amount of time on websites about this). That's me. 😎

Oh, I see where your mind is. But I was being completely serious.

Oh, sorry. I didn't realize that the poster formerly known as "hotsteamingturd" could also be so refined. My bad.

nice ferris bueller reference. that's actually one of my hobbies - sneaking TV and movie lines into every day conversation and seeing who catches them. ok, that's not really a hobby, but my buddy and i do like to throw obscure seinfeld references in when we can since we've both seen every episode at least 3 or 4 times.

like docbiohazard, i'm into home microbiology also, but of the grape rather than the barley. i'm also pretty into cooking - i'm looking forward to getting a much bigger kitchen when i move for residency so i can purchase more cool kitchen appliances and use them.

triguy - sorry to hear you haven't been able to maintain the endurance sports. i was into cycling big time as an undergrad, but have found that i can't justify a 3 hour sunday morning ride when a 7 mile run will give me the same workout in 1/3 the time. but i miss the cycling and hope to get back into it at least a little bit during residency so i can do the occasional sprint (or if i'm optimistic, olympic) triathlon. think of the 40 minutes you spend running as an investment in your sanity. i blew off the exercise during early MSI to study more, gained a lot of weight, felt like ****, and then said screw my grades and made sure to exercise at least 4 days per week. my grades went up, i slept better, and life was good again. i hope you're able to find the time to make it happen. 👍

tiki - enjoyed your "personal ad" - long walks on the beach and watching football - you're not jewish, are ya? 😍

🙁 Nope, I'm not Jewish. I may be talked into converting though if you make me some of the grape stuff. 😀

Ha. I don't mind the parabolics. Definitely seems weird that that one can get that much speed and edge out of such a short ski. I too am used to skis that look like long boards.

I read fiction, watch TV, and do both of the above while working out. I lift, run, and hike (former gymnast and diver). When I lived in Colorado I used to go out for 2-3 hour runs on the trails and long hikes up the foothills. I was an addict. It was definitely a let down moving back east. I miss the altitude.

I like to cook, play around with cake decorating and candy making, and spoil my cats.

Eventually I'd love to study a martial art-- aikido or taekwondo (I'm all about the physical and mental mastery), grow my own food, and breed cats and dogs (not for food 😱 ) or have an animal refuge. I guess these last things are more aspirations than hobbies.

What is a "hotsteamingturd"?

Well, it is possible to act refined and have an alter-ego at the same time.

No offense taken. It's all good man.

He's actually pretty damned good!

You're too kind. I am gonna enter that competition though. However, I realized that I need to have some guidance from a teacher at the conservatory and I need a real piano. I played on my old childhood piano when I got back home this weekend and although the digital piano does simulate well, it's still not the same thing. Anyways, I gotta work on putting up more recordings when I get back. Oh wait, I got step 3 coming up in less than 3 weeks!

Don't worry about that thing too much. If you did well on the others, you'll do fine on this one. Do the practice CCS cases on the CD and you should be fairly set. Besides, you've already lined up your high-powered fellowships, so now you don't need a 260+ on step 3.

I'm aiming for about a 190.

You took it already, right? See, I've been out of the clinical realm for about 3 years now.

P = MD...oh wait, I have the MD.

P = Full unlimited medical license!

Looks like a few of you could form a band. All you are missing is a drummer and maybe someone to do vocals. Does LADoc sing?

deschutes, you could dance in their music videos.

So true so true. It seems like there are a few mud phuds in this forum ... I've got poke around on some older threads and then ask some questions about mud phuds in Path and the residency path they've chosen... research tracks vs. regular residency tracks, and the like.

Fishing, not that deep sea crap either. I mean crawling through a rusty barb wire fence before sun up to get that perfect spot in the weeds before the bass start hitting...

Maybe not a typical girl hobby, but it's my idea of heaven. Anybody got a boat? 🙂

What's not typical grrl stuff - the rusty barbed wire or the pre-sun-up crawling through a field? 😉

Anyway here goes:

Family - now that I have one (full Monty - three kiddos and wife), I like to spend as much time as possible with them. Even stuff that used to bore me silly is somehow fun with 'em - still haven't figured out how that is, but it is...

Fishing - fly fishing on the salt (for ANYTHING), a river, bay, lake, creek, pond, bathtub, my dentist's fishtank (raised a few eyebrows with that one - my kids were traumatized 😉 ). Used to do "that deep sea crap" quite a bit, but got addicted to skinny water and spooky fish with the fly rod (salt and sweet water both). Fly tying goes with, of course.

Boating - any water, any boat, any time. We're moving ours from the South Shore to Sandusky Bay on lake Erie - should be good times.

Waterfowling and dogs - Kinda go hand-in-hand, these two. We just got pick of a litter and will pick up the pup late June - a Chocolate Lab from a couple of great dogs/lines. Have to shift from sea-ducks to divers and geese with the move to Ohio (anyone else here familiar, or is this all Greek?).

Skiing - getting the family season pass next year (when did I become THAT guy?). Used to race in college/Business school, now just like getting out on the hill and am looking forward to the kids getting hooked.

Exercise, NOS - was working up to a couple road races until I broke my ankle a couple months ago (running on one of those 3 degree nights trying to avoid an ice patch), now I'm a rowing machine addict.

Flying - hence the avatar. Total flight junkie, but haven't had as much time at the controls last couple years (see above!). Flew a TON during the MD/PhD, though...

Studying for Step II. That's right, I didn't take the dang thing when I graduated, and now I have to pass it before residency starts. Not that big a deal, but it's been well over 2 years since I've seen a patient... 🙄

Business - still consulting to bio-pharma as a side exercise. I like the issues and it keeps me from getting too "heads down." Money helps with the residency salary coming up, too.

Now, if I could just find an extra 12 hours in each day, I could really focus more on some of these...

TMI??

😀
