i have a 3.6/34 ....

i NEED an EMORY invite, haven't heard anything yet.
complete for about 1.5 months. i'm not sweatin' not hearing anything but when i do hear whatever, i need that interview. i'm going to write a LOI, anything else i can do to help myself?

my #1 choice my friends.

Having a current med student send an email to the Admissions Coordinator, Erica Black, will assuredly get you an invite. If you know anyone who matriculated there, nows the time to have them put in a word on your behalf. Once you get to the interview stage, dont be passive and speak only when spoken to. My friend is a third year whos interviewed a few kids this cycle. She says its always the assertive kids (they interview in groups of 3) who have a better chance.

So...what would cross the line and make people seem too assertive to the point that they seem pompous?

Wouldn't it make more sense if the Adcoms evaluated applicants based on the whole package: grades, scores, activities, essays, & interview?

Drink Coke. Lots and lots and lots of Coke (NOT "that imitation soda beginning with a P"), and send a picture of the consumed coke containers to the admissions office....that should get you on good terms with any school at Emory, actually. 🙂

just kidding, I don't want to send anyone on a crash course with diabetes. I think you're doing the right thing with writing the LOI....just really pinpoint and fully explain WHAT about Emory attracts you. Good luck!!! 🙂

I am also veru confused by Emory. I was waitlisted there two years ago. I thought my application was so much stronger this time around, but so far I have not heard anything. Despite sending an email to Erica and a LOInterest.

Just adds to the all-time favorite "this process is so random".

I think a lot of people, in group interviews, are particularly passive and dont engage themselves in the discussion, preferring instead to answer questions asked. Dont say anything inappropriate and dont make banter, but if you have something truly meaningful to contribute (like an experience that parallels something another interviewee taked about) speak up.

Oh, and I forgot to mention this last time. Emory doesnt really care for EC's and volunteer experiences. Reviewing your file, they will glance completely past those things and go straight to your LORs. If your recommenders have written only a paragraph on your behalf, you're pretty much shot. They need to really have some glowing things to say about you, or your LORs will be categorized as 'average.' There is a girl from Michigan who interviewed there with decent numbers and a good interview but as soon as they looked at LORs she was rejected. Her letters werent bad, per se, just short and it apparently didnt seem like the writers knew her well.

if the lors carry so much weight, why did they interview the michigan girl in the first place? it doesn't make sense that they would have her fly all the way out there if they knew the lors were not up to par for admission into their program. do they wait until after the interview to look at the lors? your statement confuses me. it would piss me off if they had me go up there for the interview and they rejected me based on my lors. it seems like a rejection based on lors is something you can do without having me waste my time interviewing.

In your LOI, don't forget to update them on your recent activities & accomplishments. Also, you can try sending Emory an additional LOR tailored specifically to them (ask your letter-writer to mention all the reasons why you want to go there, why the school would be a good fit for you, etc etc). If you know someone who is affiliated with the med school well (a prof, your PI?), (s)he would be ideal to write that letter. You can also ask him/her to email the Dean of Admissions.

i think you should be smooth with those stats. i am fine with their mcat average also but below their gpa primarily because i majored in electrical engineering and bioengineering with minors in computer science and math (also finished the pre-med requirements ofcourse). i'm hopin' they see this and rekonize' that my gpa sucking has reasons.
