Hi all. I did a lot of volunteer work in high school (mostly tutoring/mentoring children), but I don't have a ton in college, or a ton of clinical volunteering. Can I count my high school volunteering? It meant a lot to me and was a really good experience. I was afraid of overloading myself in college, so I stopped volunteering, but am picking it back up again.

I'm also a member of a group that gives dance lessons weekly and performs all around the county (for free), at fundraisers and in nursing homes. Can I count this as volunteer work? I feel like it is.

I also don't have a ton of clinical volunteer experience. I worked ~30 hours in the OB department of a hospital, but all I got to do was sit in a room and put charts together, so I stopped volunteering there. I have worked in the university's health center for 2 years, mostly secretarial stuff but I interact heavily with the nurse practitioners.

Sorry for so much stuff, I'm just worried. I would hope it's qualilty, not quantity, that counts in situations like these.

Generally, volunteering in high school is not listed unless it was an activity that you started in high school and continued while in college.

Ok, that's what I was thinking.

As others have said, high school doesn't count unless you continued in college or won the olympics.

This is a pretty big problem. You've never interacted with patients or physicians. This is essential to deciding if you really want to be a physician and to explaining to admissions committees that you really know what you're getting yourself into.

What you have now will be a red flag and you may find yourself without an acceptance at the end of the cycle.

Get some better clinical experience before you apply.
