What can a person do during amdission process to ensure his own acceptance chances? Are there certian student types medical schools are really looking for?

Med schools are looking for every type of person -- diversity is the buzz word of the year. However, remember that the process is fairly arbitrary, so apply to a broad range of schools and lots where your numbers match up. Try to do as well as you can wrt GPA and MCATs, and have some significant volunteer experience as well. Good luck

I would add, write good essays, and interview well.

I believe you are asking how you can Insure(not ensure) acceptance. The only thing I can think of would be to build and start a medical school and keep yourself on the board, then kindly tell the dean of admissions that you would like to attend your medical school that you built. Anything short of that; there will be a chance of not getting in. Welcome to life, the only thing that we can 100% insure is that we all will die one day.

Ensure is proper usage. :p But it's not really possible. Well, lady in red did apply to 58 schools!!! But that's taking it a little far!!

Do things you really like to do and are good at doing without regard to how med schools will view it!! Then when it comes time to apply, you'll be in good shape (assuming grades, MCAT, etc. are in order).

Oh, and read Jalbrekt's thread. Good luck!! :)

No offense niksem, but if there were a way to ensure admissions, don't you think everyone would be doing it?

There is no one way to ensure acceptance. Just do your own thing and you'll be fine in the end.

I'm sorry but I think that this question is unbelivably ignorant.

Uhhhhhh, ok so what do i need to do to get in.

Getting in is hard as hell.

Please don't take it personally

I'm just tired

be nice pelicanMan not everyone is as brilliant as you.

Get a glock; nice AK-47 submachine gun will do. Walk straight into the deans office wearing a trench-coat and a mask. Kiddnap the dean and director of admissions. As ransome, ask for asylum, $20 million in unmarked bills, and a place in their medical school class  . What I'm getting at is that no one can do anything to ENSURE admission. On the other hand, there are several things you can do to increase your chances of admission. Be DIFFERENT and have a solid academic record. Good luck.

time for moi to hit the sac. I gat a hangover.

Sleep with the director of admissions.

that was a stupid question..

Thanks for correcting me. I am not sure what I was thinking about last night. Ensure, insure, try as you may, you can't do either one.

Be the son/daughter of dean of admissions. That and Original's plan could work out.... --Trek

Ease up on my fellow Husker. He is from Russia originally (and still needing a permanent US visa and looking for all the help he can get in this process. Niksem correct me if I gave out any wrong information about you.

Well, I was asking for a possible admission strategy that will increase peron's chances of getting in to med school. I have my own theory about that so I will see if it is going to work... and I will share it when I get accepted.

Sorry guys, but I do think this is an intereting question and we all should think about it casually, even for a bit of fun.

A lot of your comments have been very very helpful. In fact, they are correct answers. Since there is nothing 100% certain, let's enlarge the definition of "ensure" to be having 99% chance. What can you do to ensure a 99% acceptance by a med school? Given that you are not a horrible student, you don't have felony record, you DO get a 4 years college degree, you DO have a GPA above 2.0 and a MCAT above 20, I believe that there are many ways to ensure your acceptance.

To build a med school is definitely good. But the cost is too great. To sleep with the dean is much better. Kidnapping the dean with violence is wrong though. I am sure you will not get into a med shcool. You probably end up running the rest of your life.

Other things I believe that you can do practically are:
1. Join the president club or things like that, be a major donor of the school. Donate at least $10 millions. (I think this one is rather easy)
2. Nominated for the Nobel prize.
3. Volunteer at a med center of a med school 12 hrs a day, 7 days a week, for 20 years and write 10 letters to the dean of admission every single day non-stop.
4. Memorize and be able to recite back and forth all textbooks of 1st and 2nd year med students.
5. Place 500 grand pianos outside the front door of the Office of Admission and 100 elephants at the back door.
6. In an med school hospital, get to know every patients' names, illness, treatment and their family members. Memorize all their names and everything about their family history.
7. Save the lives of the board members from a natural disaster.
8. Having every head of every state in the world write you a letter of recommendation.
9. Having N. Korea to threaten US with anthrax unless you are accepted.
10. Find out all the unrevealed malpractices and hidden scandal of all members of the board.

The key here is to get reallyt really really really really drhink! I mean...drunk!

Thenyou type up all your essayd and applications! Then you send them off! before you have a chance to fall asleep and sober up! this is the frekaing KEY TO SUCCESS! Lilycat will disagree b/c she hates scooby right now. id no't know what is wrong with her...she hates scooby :( :( :( :( :(
