I know this is completely irrelevant, but the end of MS2 is coming up soon, and I need a steth by march for internal med. I've been eyeing a red littman cardio III. Will this be construed as unprofessional, or will I be confused as a nurse? I The choice is between either red, grey, or black in order of preference. What color/brand of steth did you get for med school? p.s can someone reccomend a good website to order cheap steths? I'm looking at www.medisave.net for the good prices and free engraving. Thinking of buying my penlight there too. Thanks!

Heh mine is a Littman Cardiology 3 in Plum. Cute, especially because my school colour is purple. I strongly doubt anyone will give a crud what colour yours is, although they have some very flashy special edition ones here in the frozen north that I secretly think look a little toolish 😉

Up here we get a big time discount from Littman - they came to our school and everything. You could contact them about their "student prices"

One of my classmates has an orange stethoscope. We're first years, so it remains to be seen what the reaction to it will be in real (i.e. not standardized patient) setting, but at least he'll probably never lose it.

If I had chosen my stethoscope color (mine was a gift), I would definitely have gone for red or some off-red shade (burgundy, plum).

Got the black Littmann 2 point something.

There was a special offer on it, and I didn't wanna be ''THAT'' guy walking around the wards with a gold/bronze/luminous green stethoscope 😛

I got the black Littman Cardiology 3.

Is that the common stethoscope given these days? How is it compared to other stethoscopes?

I don't think anyone will care what color your stethoscope is.

Technically, the MS3 is at the bottom of the totem poll -- even below the nurse/tech/valet people.. the sad truth

Yeah, they offered this one at my school that was "chocolate with a copper finish" and while I thought it was cute, I would feel so humiliated whipping it out on the wards.

I have a Littmann Cardio III in navy blue that my school gave me. I probably would've chosen the same color myself--classy, subdued, but still different and distinguishable from the typical black. 👍

I'm an MSI, so can't say if anyone really passes judgment on your stethoscope color on the wards, but I'd be very surprised if they're really that vain.

Lol everyone at my school had the same thought...

Mine is the plum color- and no one in the free clinic or at my preceptorship has given me any crap about it. Classmates of mine have stethoscopes in red, pink, blue, green- I guess we're not a very serious class by sdn standards 😉

It doesn't matter what color it is. Only the function matters. Mine is the Littman Classic S.E . During clinicals you don't even need the fancy ones, cheaper ones are good enough. Littmans are known for quality and long term use.

Mine is red. I had serious regrets about getting a red one after being told by a classmate that a doctor told him it was an unprofessional color and it would make me stand out in a bad way.
I still love my red 'scope though. It's so me.

What exactly is an unprofessional color?

Agree that nobody cares what color your stethoscope is. I have a grenn Cardiology III because I like the color. I've seen people with blaze orange and pink stethoscopes in the hospital as well--the pink one even belonged to an attending.

I love my Littmann Cardiology II. Dark Blue tubing.
I would recommend the successor, Cardiology III for those who want to only buy one stethoscope for the next few years.

Apparently anything that isn't Black or some other boring neutral color.

And apparently, the people with the colorful 'scopes are the ones who have "made it" already (i.e. attendings and what-not)

I've got a bright orange Classic II SE. I get an occasional comment from an attending but usually it's more of a sense of amusement than disparagement. I can't see how the color of your stethoscope would make you seem unprofessional if your actual performance is up to par.

nurses and aides get colored scopes. stick with black, blue, etc

Mine is raspberry (kinda like a dark magenta). It's cute. I let my daughter pick it out, so anyone who has a problem with it can take it up with my preschooler.

And yeah, I don't think anyone will give a flying crap. I certainly don't care what anyone else's looks like.

I think colourful ones have the advantage of being less likely to "disappear" into another dimension or of "growing legs" and "walking away" when you are not looking. There is also less confusion as to whom it belongs. Great for med school and residency.

sadly, the general consensus appears to be that the Cardiology III is vastly inferior to the II.

I want a Harvey for clerkship but it's a little steep for me right now
