Hello all. I was wondering if people choose a tie that matches their suit color, shirt color, or does not match at all.

Are you supposed to wear a tie with colors that are not in any part of your suit or shirt?

Thanx much!!!

I choose ties that match the shirt not the suit. Then again one buys the shirt to match the suit. I have two interview shirts a blue one and a dull gold. I wear a yellow tie with the blue shirt and a black, diamond patterned tie with the dull gold. I think your best bet is to choose a tie that has good contrast with the shirt.

You wouldn't wear a tie that has colors in your suit (come on? black tie? grey/navy tie? no.). Depends on what kind of shirt you're wearing. If white, pretty much anything goes that isn't hideous, but if it's a shirt with a pattern (like pinstripes or somtehing), you can pick out a color that exists within that pattern. This is one of those personal taste things, don't freak out about it. If you're feeling really stumped, go to jcrew.com or bananarepublic.com to their mens section / shirts/ties to see how they've created their outfits and matched ties.

Oh ok! I always make sure that I match my tie to a color in my shirt. I thought that that was how a tie is supposed to be chosen (unless you have a white shirt). But sometimes I have seen people write all kind of things...like wear a pink shirt with a green tie (with a black suit). That's why I asked.

I used to work at Banana Republic in high school...I dont really like their taste for dress up...I am a men's warehouse kind of guy...but I see what you are saying.

Oh one more thing, don't get a tie that has a pattern on it that may induce seizures.

like what kind of pattern?

Two of my most favorite ties have neat patterns. One has diagonal navy blue and light blue (i think baby blue or sky blue) stripes and the other tie has dark blue, light blue, and a small small small speck of brown square (small square) patterns. It looks different at different angles.

Would these cause seizures?

I love diagonal stripes. When I say seizure inducing i think of really fine lines and varying colors and lots of little dots. I can't really explain to you but if you stare at the tie long enough and you start feeling a little dizzy pass on it.
