hey there...
what DID you ask the adcom? or hope to ask?

i want to ask why they were interested in dent, and why they chose to work @ the school they're @ now.

also questions specifically related to their curriculum

When they asked me if I had any questions, I tried to turn things around on them and ask them to tell me about the school and the staff that I couldn't find out from a information packet or the internet. Its simply enough, but I found that every interviewer I asked, talked for about 5-10 minutes. Hope that helps! Oh and asking questions specific to the school is always a good idea. At UIC, I asked about the GPR program because I had seen it on the website. He told me they didn't have a GPR program and hadn't for several years. So we looked at the site and there it was... He liked that I had really investigated the website, even if the information was old.

I am pretty sure the east coast schools are more into GPRs than midwest (particularly UIC) and are even trying to make it a law to do a GPR after their 4th year (I know in New York State its starting to be required to do 1 extra year in a GPR after you graduate) so that dental school really lasts 5 years. In any case, I am pretty sure that UIC isnt into that for a few reasons, but namely because its not required by the state of IL. In any case, things are going ok...still waiting on schools to make their decision...wish I was in your spot...but things will change in due time. The prosthodontics department chair at SIU told me not to expect anything until March (he said they make bulk of admissions decisions in March) but that he was confident that I had a strong chance. Still waiting on NYU, Temple, UIC (praying for an interview), and Marquette. Other than that trying to be realisitc.......I am pretty confident I will get rejected at NOVA and BU. Hope all is well with you and will let you know when things (hopefully) change. Will know more about IU at end of January.

Hang in there, Buddy, it's gonna work out. I'm sure of it. As far as the GPR program, I'm sure its like anything else and boils down to $. It has to be harder on the state schools to fund those sort of operations. I know that the military offers a GPR program if you choose to have them pay for dental school, but they call it an AEGD (Advanced Education Gen. Dentistry) and that its excellent experience, clinically especially. UIC used to have one that treated special needs patients (according to the website). I definitely would like to do a GPR, whether I do or do not specialize. Its a great way to learn about integrating yourself into the the dental community, and not just isolating your knowledge and experience to general dentistry.

I asked my interviewers a range of questions, such as why they went into education, alumni relations, practice management, particulars about each curriculum, patient recruiting and management at the school (policies, etc.), student-faculty relations, extracurriculars available, and on and on. I found that most of them appreciated being asked particular questions about their school and having the ability to expound on something they are a part of and I was able to get some more indepth knowledge about those programs.

In NY, you can take the NERB or do a GPR/residency to get licensed.

But AFAIK, by the time we graduate (i.e. 2009), we will need at least a one-year GPR to graduate; the licensing exam won't be good enough.

Sigh. Even more years added on to my education...

gpr programs pay the student. where are you going to find hospitals paying 20-40k a year for 4000 dental students?
