So what are their responsibilities that make them more special? Just curious? Is it worth the extra time and effort?

The nice thing is that in path, a Chief Rez year doesn't mean you stay on an additional year, like in Internal Med.

Since starting residency, I've learnt that there can be a great deal of variability in the duties of a chief. It also varies from program to program.

Here, being co-chief (we have 2) lasts a year and you get paid I think between $3000 and $5000 more per year. The bare minimum duties at our program would be to
(1) make up the rotation schedule.
(2) organize the longitudinal residents' lecture series every Friday (given by staff from the various sites and various AP/CP specialties), and
(3) in general be the first point of contact on behalf of the residents.

Apart from that a lot depends on the individual motivations of the co-chiefs... Our outgoing chiefs have been great, they got us free parking at the U, an increase in the book/travel fund, new computers in the CP residents' room, a new coat of paint in the surg path residents' room. And they managed to egg the department to get a newsletter going.

Is it worth the time and effort? The frustration certainly isn't worth the money 😉 Here we nominate, vote, and ask the elected if they agree to take on the role.

Its definitely not worth it, Ive seen my share of CR's with serious mental issues from people coming to them complaining, crying, whining and yelling about this or that. The amount in the real world to do their job would be in the 80-100K+ a year range easy.

I'm not doing it and I am kind of glad. Here the chief makes the schedule and goes to all the staff meetings, and basically has to be a liason. In any program there will be politics and small battles and turf wars, and the chief can get stuck in this. A lot of places, the faculty vote for chief. But here, the residents do - which is probably why I wasn't picked.

Certain types of people can do it well, but a lot just get stressed out.

I don't know, yaah, but something tells me you'd make a damn good chief.

Wow.

Here it pays 50 buck extra a pay period (aka 1200 after taxes, annual)
The cheif is selected by the staff (we have three, two AP and one CP, the AP stuff is way more work). People are asked by the staff if they will do it, but usually you don't say no. In fact I know of only one resident who managed to take himself out fo the running. One year (before we had two AP spots) they made the AP cheifnext years CP cheif. I heard she cried they day they told her, and it was not out of joy.

Here cheif = :scared: for not much money, and you get an extra line on your CV.

Well, I don't really socialize with others in the program outside of work, and I have a bit of an aloof personality which many interpret as sarcastic, arrogant, and often insensitive. I don't think I am but that's how I come across. But I'm not going to go around asking everyone how their day is or stifle criticism of things I think are silly just so they vote for me. Faculty, of course, tend to like this personality, apart from the ones who think they are still residents.

I'm moving up there this week and you're the only soul I know in AA. Will you please socialize with me outside of work, just a little? 😉

^I didn't know so many people in path had drinking problems.

No, you're on your own. 😉

Drinking problems? Huh? Not sure how that came out. I'm sure it's pretty equivalent to the rest of society.

When do you move out there?

This week! I am excited, but sad to be leaving here.

Tomorrow: Packers are here
Tuesday: Load truck
Wednesday: drive from Iowa to Michigan
Thursday: close on condo there and clean it up
Friday: unload truck

As you can see I am officially having packers but just getting ready for them, putting stuff aside, cleaning, etc. has already left me with a sore back and feet that hurt. 😱

Paying people to pack for you is some of the smartest money you'll ever spend. 👍
