Anyone who has shadowed a dentist...what do they like about their career? What are the pros and cons?

Besides the helping patients and all the personally rewarding feelings...lets see...3 day weeks, golfing, being your own boss, financial security...the list goes on.

Maybe once you're fifty and have paid off all those school loans.

Having the time to fulfill all of their other dreams, like traveling to as many countries as possible, learning about other cultures, having a respected position in the community and for having their own practice with a big fish tank in the waiting room 🙂
Big TVs in every op with NFL Season Pass is not bad either, and a nice dressing code for their
hygienists/assistants (all girls of course) 🙂

^ Picture of my practice in the future lol

I think my aunt likes her Chanel purses, her Rolls-Royce, her antique mansion, and the freedom to take a vacation to paint a Spanish countryside every once in a while.

But in reality, she's one of the hardest workers I know. She doesn't work 3 days a week; she works 6. And she doesn't really have time for many other activities besides her main hobby, painting. (She's also an award-winning artist.) She's really an amazing person who loves dentistry (she constantly attends dental seminars to learn more). And she loves it not for the lifestyle it gives her, but for the family-like relationships that she has built with her patients over the years. Otherwise, she probably could and would have retired by now if she didn't enjoy it. But don't get me wrong, she does get "sufficient financial compensation" for her hard work... and she knows how to enjoy it (I wasn't exaggerating about what I said at the top of this post).

Wow she must be very successful. What part of the country does you practice in? Is it a rural or urban area?

She has a general dent practice in Orange County. She has her own little (house-like) building next to the Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and St. Joseph's Hospital. I'd say a few things contribute to her success: good location, enormous patient base (all of whom love her like family and refer her like crazy), good size staff (about 6-8 RDAs, a couple hygienists, and about five receptionist/administrative staff), productive clinic (6 operating rooms), wide variety of treatments offered (endodontic, orthodontic, restorative, cosmetic, etc.), smart scheduling (her clinic is open Tuesday through Saturday to catch all the patients with busy work weeks), and incredible outreach to a huge Filipino patient base (many of whom have quite large families). Take all this and add that she's an incredible artist with blue ribbon paintings hanging on all of her walls, and all of this keeps new patients walking in the door.

Pros - Great hours, relatively low stress, nice income, be your own boss.
Cons - Dealing with some of the more negative patients, some things may get repetitive after time. (For the record I struggled coming up with these 2 negatives....)
