What do I do if I also volunteered while shadowing?

Saw another thread that made me wonder about this.

I shadowed with a doctor but also helped in the clinical at times. I know that shadowing is not clinical experience but what if you also volunteered for part of it?

Should I split the hours in two? What's most kosher?

What you did was shadowing. If you want clinical volunteer hours, I suggest you volunteer at a hospital/clinic/hospice. This isn’t a 2 for 1 deal.

Don't you need more shadowing hours anyways? It makes a lot more sense to consider it shadowing, and if you detail too much 'help in the clinic' they might be concerned you did things you aren't allowed to do.

A lot of volunteering was busywork so nurses wouldnt have to do it but it allowed me to interact with patients

If you want more volunteer hours then I guess split it, but shadowing is more beneficial to your application and even if you’re waiting between patients you are still shadowing that work day. Just don’t double up the hours - an 8 hour day with 4 hours in patient rooms and 4 hours of clerical work is not 8 shadowing + 4 hours volunteer time.

yeah definitely wouldnt double up andcwould explain in activity summary section. maybe ill just go with shadowing. its just there are some things i learned interacting with patients which i didnt dont get to do shadowing

Depends...are you short on volunteering or shadowing?

I just listed my combined job as whatever I was short in (clinical for me) and then noted in the description that it was a 50/50 clinical volunteering and shadowing gig

I would like to argue this. Not specifically in the context of OP's case but in a more general light with the example of scribing. @LizzyM has clearly stated previously that scribing fulfills both the clinical exposure and shadowing requirements. So I think it's possible to "double dip" in certain contexts.

Yea it’s not just possible but encouraged and highly efficient. You could spin almost any EC as fitting at least 2 categories.

One of the less desirable, but totally necessary things to do as an applicant is maximize the apparent activity within your hours

One 'tip' I've been given is if you are trying to list it as two categories, officially list it as one category but speak of it as if it's in another category.
