So, I have already been accepted to a school that I know is the best place for me. After my acceptance, I received an interview invite from another school. I accepted it out of a sense of obligation, as it is the same place as my undergrad and I feel like I would've disrespected a lot of faculty members who've done so much for me there by turning it down. However, I can't help but feeling that I'm stealing somebody else's opportunity to realize a dream. It's scheduled for the middle of the month, should I cancel or go? Since I did undergrad there, I know there is nothing that will happen on interview day to catapult it over the school I've already been accepted to.

go to the school that is the best place for u

Just want to credit you on your mindset. As compared to the people who feel it's reasonable to hold on to 10+ acceptances until April.

Congrats! If you hands down 100% want to go to the school you were accepted to, then decline the interview. However, what about money/scholarships/grants? What if this school at your alma mater offers you more money? Would that affect your decision? Something to consider, maybe you already have. Ultimately you should go to the school where you think you'll fit best, and it's certainly okay to turn down offers after an acceptance.

They earned those acceptances and could be waiting for financial aid to decide. Maybe 10+ is unreasonable but holding onto multiple acceptances is not

You bring up great points. My family and I agreed that my decision to attend a school wouldn't be swayed by money if money was the only factor being considered. That being said, I still don't know if that would be the case here. I honestly never expected to be in this position, so I'm a bit unprepared to handle it. I was praying for one INTERVIEW a few months ago, I never fathomed the possibility of multiple acceptances. I've already declined another.

Unrelated, I've already planned out the week of my interview around visiting old friends and old favorite spots, and going to a football game the day after. I feel like a true jerk thinking that that could be the only reason I haven't cancelled 🙁

What would your gut tell you in this situation? Like I said, I could be stealing another very deserving person's only chance. If I knew someone did something like that to me, I can't say what I'd wish upon them. And if I have a moral dilemma over this, I know I'll be a horrible doctor 🙁

I declined 3 interviews, one of which after my first acceptance and the other two after I was accepted to my top choice. If I were not swayed by money and knew without a doubt that the school I was accepted to far surpassed the other school, I would drop the interview. If you have had thoughts that there's a chance you'd go to this other school, go to the interview. Do you think you have a solid picture of the med school since you did undergrad there? How much interaction did you have with med students, faculty, administrators, etc?

Drop the week of fun out of your pro/con list. Heck, take the vacation even if you're not going to the interview.

And buck up, it's a hard decision, and it doesn't mean you'll be a horrible doctor. It wasn't a simple or fast decision to decline my interviews, but I ultimately knew I wasn't going to end up there so why waste the spot and the money on travel.

I don't think you understand.

Your undergrad SOM could offer you merit, and then when your fave school finds out next spring, your fave school may feel moved to also offer merit to protect yield.

Go to the interview. Money may not be a factor, but it would still be nice to save the money so if getting accepted to other schools will increase your chances of getting a higher scholarship to your top choice then you should go for it.
