If i am aiming to take the 2005 mcat, what do i need to be doing to prepare myself in the application process? How early should you enter profile on amcas? I am going to take a prep course in jan, sign up for the mcat. Is there anything else?

I'd say concentrate on the MCAT's. If you have time, write a rough draft of your PS and edit and re-edit for a few months. And really start concentrating on it after MCAT. AAMCAS is available in June, but your scores won't be out until mid-June. But if u submit it first, you can start on your automatic secondaries. I would wait and see how you did first before applying.

Very important is to get your letters of recs ready. If you have a committee, schedule an interview earlier because June-August is busy time of the year. My committeee is nice because they didn't need my MCAT scores, so I schedule it June first week.

Good luck with MCATs and apps next year.

If it is available, I would take an early start class that begins in October. I did this and I think it made the whole MCAT thing much less stressful. I second Uegis on the LOR and I would also suggest sending in your transcripts right after the MCAT, but well before you submit your AMCAS. Ask other people you know or other SDNers if you can get some of their secondary apps. A lot of the questions are always going to be on the app, so you might as well start on them after you are done with your AMCAS PS...once you're on a roll, why stop??

good luck!

First, stop. Breathe. Relax. It's September now, the MCAT isn't until April, and you can't apply until June.

This semester, focus on rocking your prereqs and getting good extracurricular experiences. You don't want to start studying for the MCAT now because you'll probably burn out. Worry about that next semester.

Be thinking about who you want to ask for rec letters, but it probably won't hurt to get to know your professors for another semester. If you have letters and everything else square with your premed committee before the end of the school year, you should be fine.

Even once AMCAS goes up, you don't have to submit in early June because many schools don't send out secondaries - even automatic ones - until mid-July. I was processed 7-13 and still got the first wave of secondaries.

Applying is a long, hard slog, so don't start freaking out about it this far in advance. Believe me, you'll have plenty of chances to stress during the cycle - just look around at us neurotic applicants on SDN. 🙂 Good luck!
