I know there was a thread about this before, but I can't find it. Sorry for the repeat thread, but I am staying with a host tomorrow for an interview and want to buy her a present, but I'm not sure what would make a good gift. Chocolates? Buy her a dinner out? What have you all done?

present for a student host?! can u come interview here so I can host you please? 😍

Maybe a bottle of wine? Even if she doesn't drink, it's always good to have wine around the house for other guests (like me!).

I made a super-rad mix CD and gave copies to my hosts 🙂

I bought my host dinner... everyone's ideas sound good to me!

Just take them out to dinner/lunch at a place they suggest, your treat.

If I was hosting I would want an xbox 360 🙂

I mean I would not complain if they gave me that 😛

I got my host some shot glasses, followed by a night of angry monkey sex. =P

go to their lecture for them and take excellent, clearly written notes with highlighted important points that correlate to previous years' test questions.

and sex.

but seriously, if I were to host, which I may next semester, I wouldn't expect anything beyond a "thanks."

I think a fair trade-off for a roof over your head the night before your big interview would be a thorough cleaning of said domicile. As you will soon find out, med students have very little time for things like bathing, shaving, cleaning, or even urinating, so any help with those activities would be appreciated.

Oh, and if you are a girl and could wear the stereotypical "maid" outfit while doing this, that would be nice.

Guys can go sleep under a bridge.

Hahah helping with urination 😀.

Anyone know of stories where the host and the interviewee got it on? I assume they don't care for pairing girl/girl and guy/guy so there must have been some of these.

I've gone with a good bottle of local wine for my hosts (I go to school in the New York finger lakes region, so it's not hard to come by). I'm also sure to clean up after myself, fold the linnens/put the futon back to sofa position before I leave....nothing worse than having to clean up after a complete stranger when you offer them a place to stay.

Just go out and party with your hosts. They love that. Don't throw up on the futon/couch.
They're students!
I think it's nuts to buy them gifts...if I hosted someone - I mean I've agreed to host someone - I wouldn't ask for payment/gratuities. Just respect of myself/my space, and a cool, open-minded, person to talk to. Simple stuff.

Would a $25 starbucks card be a decent thanks?

I've bought my hosts cheesecake to share with roommates, or sent a bouquet of flowers. There's nothing like coming home from a long day to find pretty flowers at your doorstep. I've been able to stay with friends at the different schools, but I still like to thank them for their entertaining me for a night. 😉 Oh, and I've only stayed with women - I don't know if I'd send guys flowers...maybe a year's subscription to Maxim?

Buy them a couple beers at the bar.

I heartily second that!

BTW most schools give their student hosts good stuff anyway. I get paid $25 per hosting (in bookstore money). so the only thing an interviewee is really expected to do from any host is to clean up after yourself and not trash the place and just be a good guest in general. food is always nice, though. but not expected at all

Attention: New Paranoia

Do student hosts report back to the adcoms with their opinion?
