Hi,
I'm planning to take the DAT soon. I wanted to hear good preparation techniques preferably from folks who've taken the DAT before. Can you please share your experience about what worked best and was most helpful for the DAT preparation?
Thanks.. looking forward to getting some helplful responses. : )

Study Study Study!

Use your college book for O chem. For the other subjects buy subject review books. I reviewed Bio with an MCAT bio review book. Can't remember the name, but any will probably do. Same with general chem. For math I studied some 40 page college algebra review book, worked great. I still don't know what an arctangent is though. Who cares, I still got a 22 on math.
Just remember when you think you understand EVERYTHING get a new book and study some more. The DAT is very seriuos. Doing well on it can change your life. Getting into Dental School is the difference between a $50,000 job and a $150, 000 job for the rest of your life. Study like it means just that.

Of course, I also used Kaplan, Barrows, and TopScore review stuff as well. Get to work!

I agree with Brand,
I use my text books for Ochem and Gchem. Then Campbell for Bio.
The gre software for math and english.
And I used Princeton and Topscore for Practice test. 3 weeks before my test day, I take 1 test every day in the am. Then I reviewed what I missed in the evening. The day before my test, I reviewed the flash cards, to make sure I didn't leave anything out.

It wasn't that bad at all. A good experience.
Good luck with your test

I bought a Kaplan book from Barnes and Noble and memorized it from front to back (I went from front to back 5 or 6 times). I think the book covers thoroughly every section except for Biology. You will probably have to rely on the info that you've absorbed over time from your Bio classes. Or you can try finding an MCAT prep book (they go into a lot of detail).

I found that in regards to the perceptual section, look at the questions that are included in the packet used to apply to take the DAT. Most books that are published make the perceptual section look too easy (including the Kaplan book mentioned earlier...I was getting perfect scores in the Kaplan book).

In regards to practice tests, I took the one included in the DAT application packet and the ones in the Kaplan book. The one in the application packet is most like the real thing and I thought was a good reflection of what you might see on the real thing.

If you find that you are not doing that hot on the practice tests...don't worry about it!!

On all of my practice tests, I was scoring 17s and 18s. Then the day before the real thing, I took the practice test in the application packet and scored a 19. My final score for the DAT was a 25A/23P!

Good luck with the test. Remember to stay confident and remain calm.

Kaplan course !!

Take complete advantage of all their practice tests, review materials, and subject tests. I recommend reserving 2-3 months for strict preparation for the DAT.

I f you can't afford the course, I suggest you go to yur nearest bookstore and buy Kaplan's DAT review bible. This will require more work on your behalf, and a much more aggressive approach in terms of obtaining decent resources. Remember, study now, play later - make it a full-time commitment !

Best of luck !!

Oh yeah, remember to buy Topscore !!! It's a bit more difficult than the actual exam in G.Chem, but all other subjects seemed the same !! You'll be just fine !

Take the kaplan course and do all of the practice tests that they have...you really have to master those. The college text books are also very useful.
Good Luck to Ya From LT:laugh:

Going through your old class lecture notes would help a lot to refresh your memory. 🙂 AFter all, most of DAT stuff comes from what you already studied.
the red kapan book should be studied if you aren't taking their course.

Use kaplan! Forget your notes, kaplan condenses what you need to know
