Some of you may recognize this question from a certain supplemental application, but I'm really just curious as to what people dislike about the field. I find so many "pro's" as to why I'm choosing dentistry and I'm having trouble thinking of things I dislike about the field (because I really like it!!) Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Exactly!....My guess is that this is from Penn's application, because I answered it myself.......Everything has a negative associated with it....what do you think are some things that could be negative about dentistry, or possibly make people look at dentistry as a career in a negative way??

Maybe the fact that people associate dentistry with having the highest suicidal rates... That's a con, but it all depends if a person is loony from the get go.

Be like, If I was to hate my spouse then I would end up seeing him/her very often due to the short hours that I work 😉

Hahahaha, probably something due to the chemicals dentists encounter...

This is a myth, its not true, you can look it up

The thing that makes me the most grumpy is trying to get into dental school.

One thing I've heard several dentists complaining about is back and neck problems due to the position they work in.

The part of dentistry I enjoy least so far is dental school. Feel free to use that. 😉

You got maybe what you wanted to .JK. Keep up there for us pre-dentals.

Filling out applications and keep thinking about ways to impress them during the interviews...j/k
There must be something you dislike...we all know that its not all flowers!!!

well, there is a difference between "like least" and "dislike"...

in so cal... i see alot of hispanics becoming DA's so they are in the field... just not the main chair...xi

LMAO ok. easy for some to say who arent in our shoes. This guy: "Whats that little hispanic, ur worried that there won't be other ppl like you to hang out with in dental school? Its ok, im sure there should be some gardeners or janitors on campus that you could grab a taco with."

(lmao this is only a joke im really jk) Maybe they meant it that way...but regardless it made me laugh.

Ya, I'd say like everything there is definately some stink-weed amongst the flowers. I have dentist friends that say a gossipy group of drama queen staff can stink, worse than the stink weed. Also I'm sure dealing with extremely crabby patients, screaming kids, and walk-ins trying to get pain meds from you could make you want to punch your own face.

Honestly I would say (1) all the debt and (2) possibility of neck/back pain.

While it is true that there are few Hispanics, I would not mention that in an application or interview as something that you don't like about dentistry. It isn't an aspect of dentistry any more than it would be an aspect of law, MBA, or other advanced professional programs. With this question they want to know that you have given some thought about the disadvantages of dentistry as a profession, on a day to day basis, not your views on the politics of affirmative action.

i hear if you are fit and work out often, it is a non-issue.

I think it would really suck to not be able to provide care to patients that you see really need it. For instance if they cannot afford it or don't comply with your treatment regime. I'm not saying that everyone should do exactly what their dentist tells them, but when you are truly recommending something for the best interests of your patient, and they don't agree for whatever reason - that could get frustrating. Because you really have no control over it.

Particularly in Canada where we see much of medicine socialized and then see the exact opposite for dental services - this frustrates me. To think that if you get punched in the gut you can go to the hospital and they will fix you for free, but then if u get punched in the face and some teeth get chipped, the hospital can only do so much. You will be referred to a dentist who will charge x amount which may not be affordable to everyone. It's a shame that such a vital healthcare is treated as a 'non-necessary' service and thus not publicly financed.

See, now if i was on an adcom, this is the type of answer which would make me look twice at the rest of their application and hopefully give them an interview.....whether I agree with what they say or not, this is an answer that appears to have a lot of thought behind it......I suggest to use this one as a good example

YES!!!! The part I hate most about dentistry is becoming Quasimodo. It just ain't sexy, baby.

The thing I least like about dentistry is the negative attitude the public has about it and, as a dentist, I would take seriously the opportunity to change this perception.

GOLD. Like the other poster said.
I like the second part more. It is more emotional than the first. First is something anyone working can say. The second one is right on the spot for dentistry.

Saliva! I'm not kidding, I REALLY don't like saliva but I think dentistry is really cool and we do wear gloves so at least we don't have to touch that vile stuff.

Oooh ooh worse than saliva = vomit. Oh yes, the pedodontist I assist got vomited on last week. I've not assisted him long enough to have seen this happen before, but he says it's more common than you would assume, and usually he's good at anticipating it and getting out of the way, but not that day ... I was lucky to be out of the path of projection 😛
