Why do you want to be a dentist.


I looked up some threads and I agree with what other people say. Its like describing a color to a blind person. Or why you dislike a food. No answer is perfect but I mean what do you say? The ____ and the ____ go well together.

I think my PS was well written and true and all, but its just such a complex question what do you say, do you have a line or two you tell everyone? I just dont really know what to say. I guess I could string a bunch of things together but its the whole package not particularly any one aspect.

Thoughts? (and I know someone is going to go, its such a personal thing you need to discover it for yourself...but come on now...)

Thankfully my dad is a dental lab owner, so I can talk all day about why. To be honest if he wasn't, I doubt id be in the place i am now. You have to speak from the heart man. Just hope you don't get an interview question like my friend did which was: so what do you want to talk about?

I would absolutly take this question at the start of an interview, that would kinda show its laid back and not really grilling me. I will hope to have that question to start off with 🙂

To the OP: I know it is a little hard to word it and not make it sound too boring. Use ur personal statement and summarize it like a story. Tell that story to ur advisor/friend/coworker or just a random person on a street and see what are their responses.

Mock interviews, practicing, formulating answers is nice and all, but honestly, go from your heart on game day. The adcom will know and feel that the formulated answer was formulated and know the 'on the spot' (to a certain extent) is more real, so to speak. Tell them why you want to be a dentist. It's an easy question for me...

i answer it in a way like "why wouldn't i want to be a dentist". i make a simple list of things i like/dislike about the field, and why the field fits or does not fit me. i found a lot more things that i liked, and how i'm a great match for dentistry (and vice versa).
honestly though, it's such a personal thing, you need to discover it for yourself.

do practice runs with a friend, i did it with a friend for some mock interviews our committee required that you take with professors. It can be really helpful and enjoyable, I had a lot of laughs doing it lol
