For all you guys out there who either inteviewed at Meharry or want to share opinions.

What do you really think of the school? I recently interviewed there, but I do not think it is as bad as I heard. I actually liked the atmosphere and people were SO down to earth and ready to support students all thw way. I would appreciate your input. Thank you guys🙂

Without knowing anything about the school, I can tell you that an applicant with "pretty low stats" is better off going to said medical school than turning down an offer of admission only to re-apply a year later.

Perhaps you should post this comment in almost EVERY thread regarding specific med schools since I imagine it applies to OTHER med schools too!🙄

I have a few friends that are at Meharry and that love it! I just got my interview there and I am looking forward to going. They have a brand new Womens Health Center that deals specifically with disparities among women. I am excited and would love to be class of 2011

I am interviewing there on Friday (11/10) :scared: and except that they run on a low budget (not state funded), everything I've heard about the school is pretty positive. If I'm accepted there and none of my state schools shows me any love, can you guess where I'm going? 😉

Just thought I'd bump this up.
Anyone going to Meharry for sure?
And I also wanted to ask...at my interview, seemed like all of the students were dressed up..but there was an MLK celebration that day so I'm thinking the attire was attributed to that but I really don't know for sure. Does anyone know if dressy-casual attire is an everyday thing? Kind of a miniscule thing but I'm just curious...
Thanks guys 🙂

I interviewed and was accepted.

Overall i liked it, I'd go there if i had no other offers

The thing that sucks the most is that school starts in june.....crazy!

Although I sent in my deposit ($300 😱 ) last week but I'm still not sure where I'm going to go. I'm so undecided between Meharry and HI...😕

Yeah, I sent in my deposit as well and I am still undecided and waiting to hear back from some schools. I just wanted to hold the spot because I need more time and I figure whats a loss of $100 considering the thousands spent on this process. The only drawback is the start date in June....
BTW...may I ask what is HI-I'm guessing you meant HU?

When I had my interview the students we had lunch wiht were kind of dressed up, but they said it was only because of them being with us. I saw other ppl around campus dressed normally (jeans, jogging pants).

School looks kinda creepy, b/c they do not have a lot of funding, but they do have many opps. for students to get hands on learning/training, especially since the merger of the hospitals. They also have a student support service that offers tutoring, which is recent. All the schools I have interview at thus far have not had this offering to students. If I don't get into my state school, and Meharry lets me in, Meharry is where I will be going.

R~

PS: hands on learning is sometimes a way of getting you to pay them to do work that they should have employed someone to do, while you learn nothing of value to you.

i got an interview and declined. there were two reasons. i work for a doctor and he had no idea when i said i had an interview at meharry medical college. he had to look it up in the web. i dont give much about prestige but that was a little extreme. also the location was a big change from my entirely midwestern experience , although a change might have been nice.

now im wondering if it was stupid to decline. the awesome low tution, (i would be paying twice as much to go to RUSH )and the fact that school starts in June. RUSH starts in September. Im depressed and sick of my job and wondering how to survive till Sep

I think your first reason is a little naieve. My P.I. had never heard of the school and asked me where it was, I simply told her it is an HBCU in Nashville and I wasn't surprised she hadn't heard of it, as a matter of fact, it didn't bother me the least bit that she had never heard of it. And before I even told her about it, I thought about declining, then I said...I cannot have these preconceived notions and judge a school based on how popular it is. I know a guy who went to Meharry and he couldn't stop talking about it so maybe I am biased. With that said, I went to the interview and I really liked it...I was happy that I went to see all the school to offer. As a matter of fact one of my interviewers who now works there said he "shrugged it off" when he heard about it in medical school (he went to a school in the midwest). He expressed that people don't really know about the good things Meharry is doing and that he is very happy to be a professor there today.

Now, your second reason- that one is more reasonable because when you do get invited for interviews, it is very expensive and you must ask yourself- Will I possibly go there if I got in? If your answer is no because of the location, then okay...but if you are shaky, I would say do your research on the school and location and make a decision. Now I don't know what the midwest has to offer but Rush is in Chicago if I'm correct? Chicago is a pretty booming city so it would have been a change for you but...sometimes change is good.

With that said, it is too late to look back and have regrets, I'm sure Rush is just as good as any other school out there but use this as a learning experience and in the future....I think it would be best to make a better informed decision.

Hey! As a heads up, we definitely don't dress up for class everyday. We were required to dress up for the MLK Celebration, but on the regular we're jeans and a t-shirt kinds of people. The dental students have to dress up though, whenever they have class in the Dental School (meaning pretty much everyday).

Congrats!

I am a third undergraduate at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville,Florida, majoring in psychology, with a minor in mathematics. Does Meharry accept only science majors? What is the average GPA (science GPA and overall GPA)and MCAT scores? When it comes to the Residency match list, do aspiring residents apply for combined residencies or psychiatry residency or both?:scared:

These are questions you can answer by researching their website, the MSAR, and emramatch.org, respectively.

Why did you give me the emramatch.org website? I am not interested in emergency medicine. Also, I researched the website and I could not find the answer to any of my questions.

Isn't Meharry something like 95%+ black?
I wouldn't go even if I got an acceptance. There's not enough diversity their. It's a Historically black college and everyone is from the same mold.
I'd bet you'd feel out of place if you grew up in White Suburbia.

Eh... let's not use that as an argument. Try "I wouldn't really fit in with their mission statement".

You see, it sounds better AND avoids the flamebait! 👍

Not really trying to start a flame. Just saying most people probably consider how well they would fit into the student body when choosing between different Medical Schools.

It's cool.

Is Meharry more of a medical school that teaches medical students to become clinicians or is Meharry more of a research-oriented medical school?:scared:

According to mission statement, they are primary geared toward training medical professionals for minority and underserved areas and research specifically in that field (MSAR says "healthcare disparities")

if you are black or latino/a, do it, if not, you are against a large number of white/asian applicants. I interviewed there 3 years ago and they only accepted like 15 non black applicants. Anyways, the schools is run down and I would say it would rank below any other schools that I have seen.
