hi everyone. i have to stay close to nyc for family reasons so here is my list of tentative schools. i have a 3.4 and hopefully a 30 on AUG MCAT i would love some feedback.
SUNY Downstate my #1 choice
SUNY Stonybrook
SINAi and Einstein- v.big reach
NYMC
the two schools in jersey
and maybe the onnecticut school

what do u think?

Dr Su,

Applying to less then 20 schools is not really a good idea for someone with your stats. I would pick a few more on the east cost..maybe in pennsylvania? I didn't see Albany on your list..I would add that one too. Your goal should be too increase you chances as much as possible..and that would mean sending you application to more then 7 schools. Stats-wise..I am not sure about the SUNYs..but NYMC and Albany will probably give you an interview. Mount Sinai and Einstein are a bit iffy..but you know that already.

Good luck! 🙂

i certainly hope it works out for you, and i can definitely understand the importance of the school's location; but personally i was either waitlisted or rejected from all the schools you mentioned (didn't apply to jersey schools) with much higher stats. perhaps your other credentials are much better than mine and they like you a lot more  or you just luck out, but you have to understand that applying to so few schools, you're taking a big risk.
if nothing else, at least apply to NYU as well...it's a painless non-amcas application.

thanx everyone... basically here is my situation, my husband has a job in nyc as a social worker that pays him almost double what he would get anywhere else. because i plan to have a child sometime in med school, i have to stay asclose as i can to my family. i realize the risk that i am taking, but i am working on an mph, which would raise my gpa if i apply again. i think i have good ec's but they are probably not better than anyone else's.

about nyu, i have heard that if you have c's on your trnscript ( i have 2) not to bother applying.

The University of Connecticut has a strong preference for residents of Connecticut. Only very qualified applicants, under-represented minorities, MD/PhD students, or Connecticut residents are considered for admission. They typically only take about 10 out-of-state students each year.

FYI...Albany and NYMC are definitely not safety schools in terms of securing an interview. NYMC receives about 10,000 applications and Albany gets close to 7,000. I think you may have a good shot at SUNY Downstate with your credentials. Best of luck to you, I realize how important it is for you to stay close to home.

You definitely should apply to more schools! Your stats are alright, but not so good that you should feel confident applying to less than 20 schools. Good luck 🙂

Do you have to have a kid in medical school? I personally wouldn't suggest that. Most the women doctors I talk to think that's not so good a plan... but you can see more about that in the spouses forum.

Look, some schools have to be a safety schools, even if it's only relative. Albany and NYMC ARE safety schools. Yes, they have a whole bunch of applicants, but most of those applicants don't have either of those schools as their top choice and most of those applicants have low GPAs and MCATs relatively. I know on this board people like to make out that every school is super-difficult, but some schools are easier to get into and Albany and NYMC are definitely among those.

relatively prime,
from most people that i have talked to, they say that unless u can wait until after residency to have a child, the best time is in med school. they say that med school allows much more time flexibility than residency. i will be 32 when i finish residency and probably 2 more years fellowship. i do not think that 32 is a good age to start having kids. i don't know how it is going to work out, but with family support i can do it. i have a friend who is a 2nd year psych resident, she had 2 kids in med school, and one last month. she says it's doeble. i guess we will see...

A medical school "safety school" is different from a college safety school in that even if your chances are good, you still can't count on getting in. When applying to college... a safety school was a schools with a ~75% percent acceptance rate where you could pretty much count on getting in... for medical school, your safety schools might have ~25% acceptance rate and you only have a "good" chance of getting in. This is why when applying to medical school you really should have at least 5 "safety schools."

just my $0.02 🙂

just consider that you have nothing to lose (except mere $60, which is cheaper than other schools since there is no additional amcas fee) and a whole lot to gain. and like i said, its a painless application, the only essay being a personal statement (feel free to use the amcas version).
up to you, but personally i wouldn't let a couple of c's limit my options, it is something that you'll probably have to explain to EVERY school anyway, not just nyu.

thanx assasin, you convinced me.
