Doctorate in Lab Science

I'm curious what your opinions are on this. I'm an MT (also an MSII) and personally I think this is totally unnecessary. I think the many of the tasks he has in mind for the DCLS actually falls in the realm of CP. I think a degree like this is an idea thought up by dissatisfied techs who want more prestige and visibility. I have to admit, most of my experience on this is from the role of the tech, and I'm interested to know if any of you think there is a place for a lab "practitioner".

Yep, it sounds to me very much like the realm of CP, and totally unnecessary. He also lost me when he referred to the MD as an "entry level degree".

It seemed like quite a stretch, in terms of scope of practice. Another recurring theme that kept bothering me was "Who would pay for these people?" With all the problems related to health care finance I don't see how inserting another person into the "team" is going to do anyone any good.

Seems like a direct assault on CP to me.

Thats what I kept thinking as I read through it. I don't really see anyone getting too much support for this from groups like ASCP, CAP because it does encroach on CP.

I think the writer just meant to say that they would still be keeping the b.s. entry degree into clinical lab and not enforce everyone to get a doctorate. Whereas in medicine, you must get an "M.D." to enter the profession (entry level).

i still dont get who would get the DCLS?MD? MT?

it sounds like a fast track to admin land or dean of medtech school or something like this- which is needed right?

certainly administrative-----

as a med tech, i would guess you would agree with the statement that most of your real learning occurred in the lab-actually doing the stuff you end up doing on a daily basis--
i m thinking probably for big centers where there are already a lot of titles
