I've read that dentistry had issues establishing itself as a profession, but thanks to some surgeons the profession stayed alive. Now, the profession was made to be seperate but equal to medicine, but many people perceive that a dentist is just a tooth mechanic or something.

Why would the teeth and gums be less than the eyes, skin, ears etc? A medical doctor once told me, "teeth are just teeth--don't need them!" Yeah easy for someone with teeth to say!

BTW, teeth are sensory organs (not accepted worldwide).

Don't tell me dentistry is not equal to medicine because an ENT surgeon can do oral Surgery (oral cancer), when in doubt an oral surgeon can do most of ent work accept ear, nose, and throat, but when have you seen and ent do dental work (dental implants, impacted teeth)?

Some evidence: NoVa DO program offers DO/DMD program for DOs. Another sign is in Europe, medical students are becoming interested in OMFS, so now medical students have to complete a Dental degree in three years prior to OMFS residency.

Do you agree that dentistry is seperate but equal to medicine?

BTW, not upset, but very curious to know how open minded people are these days.

its definitely easier to get into dental school. and while teeth are nice to have, dentists basically never deal with life or death issues. For some doctors, life or death is all they do.

you seem to suggest that teeth and gums are just as important as other organs. but really, they're not at all.

also, dentistry is less complex than the work of many physicians. There's just not as much going on.

Sure, I say they are equal. Everyone here knows the correlation between oral health and the rest of the body.

Now don't try to troll the forum.

Except for detecting oral cancers (which are notoriously aggressive)

I will now go back to pleading the fifth

Completely innocent question:

Why are dentists and podiatrists their own professions? Why can't an MD or DO specialise in dentistry or podiatry, just like cardiology or neurology or dermatology? I do think that dental work is very important. So why is it not a medical specialty?

Obviously the current dental and podiatric (word??) infrastructure would not be pleased if the professions melted into one category, but what is the reason behind the distinction?

I saw your sensory organ thread in pre dent and wanted to comment but thought better of it.

Teeth are sensory organs in the exact same way your femur is. This is according to the link you gave there. This was not the best place to pose this question grasshoppah

And.... please proofread. It is very hard to take someone seriously when they can't use the correct words in their posts. SDN is not a middle schoolers Facebook page.

Here is the thing: you propose an incendiary concept and label anyone who doesn't agree as closed minded. That is in and of itself closed minded.

Dentistry is largely not equal to medicine. Nor should it be. It is a focus for those who want to do it. You bring up some mundane dental procedures that ENTs don't do as if that is meaningful. ENTs also don't ring up your groceries. It isn't because it is too hard. Some dental specialists are equal to or more highly trained than some physicians. But on the whole dentistry is a practice of focused generalists who practice more in routine maintenance than in tx of disease. It is a necessary field and one that is a very good choice for those who want the perks (lifestyle and salary) without the extensive training. So stop the arbitrary d*** measuring. If you attempt to measure a dentist by the physician's yard stick 99.9999% of them will come up short. The same is true in the other direction as well.

👍 Could not had said it better myself. You're going to come up short if you get into this measuring contest. Dentistry is a good profession, however I don't really understand what motivates people to go into the field other than the money and lifestyle. I don't understand what inspires people to go into dentistry.

Dentistry is not equal to medicine.

Different education + different training + different degrees + different procedures = not equal

I want to know the answer to this too. I'm sure I'll get flamed for this lol but here goes..

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see how family medicine doctors; where all it seems that they do are routine check ups and refer patients to other doctors when they have a more particular problem, are that different than dentists who do routine check ups and cleanings in the sense that both will not be dealing with life or death situations on a typical day.

I am by no means saying they do the same thing, it just seems like the nature of what they are doing is similar and very basic.

There are even nurse practitioners and PA's that do a similar thing compared to family medicine doctors and still get paid well with half the training required. I'm not saying family medicine doctors are unnecessary, I just don't see what makes them so superior compared to a dentist. And if I wanted to go into FM, I personally would just go to PA school so I could have a better lifestyle and less years of my life studying but still make a decent living.

I think superiority wise FM = Dentist but Cardiology/EM/Surgery > Dentist

No one is claiming that one is superior to the other. They are working professionals in different fields.

I think superiority wise FM = Dentist but Cardiology/EM/Surgery > Dentist

And what exactly is your scale for determining this rank?

Dude relax, they are still sensory organs; dentistry is not a maintenance practice, there may be less disease to treat in the dentistry, but that doesn't make it inferior to medicine.

Take care of those pearly whites buddy!

They are similar. Although FM will more routinely manage chronic issues than dentistry

Yes. You didn't read anything I said

Why dont you repost that Technicolor blog that says they are sensory organs for the benefit of everyone here.

😕 Did you just completely ignore the paragraph above it? I scaled it based off of the reasons I explained above, if you disagree then explain why you disagree instead of arguing minuscule details. It was obviously opinionated and I'm asking for others to explain why this would not be the case because its a topic that I never understood well.

Orthopedic surgeons can specialize in foot and ankle, MDs don't have a fellowship for dentistry.

The money and lifestyle isn't guaranteed. To get the most of your degree you would have to open up a private practice which have an enormous startup costs. Just like physician who choose medicine, I think most people who went the dental route feels some inclination to give people a nice smile.

Are you saying that they're equal in rank respectevely?

Rank.... 🙄

You are posting in an attempt to coax people to tell you what you want to hear.
I tell you what. Dentistry can never be "ranked" as high so long as pre dents are acting like you are 🙄

Dude, you sound very ignorant!

I did want opinions, but I'm also proving a point, and it seems like it got you fired up!

If you ever need dental treatment, make sure you tell your medical colleagues!

I've always ranked dentists alongside car mechanics.

I'm not fired up at all. What is it I am ignorant of? Not pampering your ego is not the same thing btw
You sound naive and yes, you are most definitely proving points

Face it! A dentist is essentially a physician of the mouth (stomatology).

Do you also flip the ruler around to the cm side when you sneak off to the bathroom to measure?
Seems bigger, don't it?

Dude! How did you went from teeth to measuring my penis?

You can continue to engage this like a middle school drop out while being the embarrassment of your potential future colleagues and possibly get the ban hammer for trolling or you can discuss points directly. Nobody here is impressed with your antics nor are you really getting a rise out of anyone. You're just acting like a *****.

Go ahead and convince yourself that I am rage facing over here so you can believe that at least there was one time in your life you were better than someone who was going to be a physician  but currently my reload speed (playing video games btw) is more irritating than you are.

1) teeth are not sensory organs. You claiming as much only highlights how little you know

2) dental practice is much more preventative and maintenance oriented than medicine. This doesn't make it bad. But this is true.

3) everyone, med and dental alike, thinks you are "speshul" when you enter into a thread and? Respond to dissenting views by calling names like a child (referring to the points which implied basically "I know you are but what am I")

If you're in this to get some rage out of people well.... being palpably smarter than someone doesn't usually piss me off much so you are fighting an uphill battle. But I can't shake the feeling that you actually think you know what you're talking about.

Oh wow! you're now acting like a mature medical student, it seems like I got you upset, but guess what? I don't care! You seem to think that medicine is better than dentistry, but thats what ignorant and close minded people do.

And, teeth are not officially sensory organs, but many believe so.

Don't speak for people, speak for yourself!

Dentistry is not better than medicine and vice versa.

Dental medicine is not a routine maintenance like your vehicle--get it right!

I wonder if you have any idea how right you are proving me to be  🤣 probably not.

Do yourself a favor and go find where I said medicine was better. You're getting all butthurt here while trying to pretend that I'm the one that is upset. Its kinda cute in a ******ed puppy sort of way 😀

And don't forget this is you 🙁 no smile

Just go play you video games and that ruler measuring! I got more important thinks to do!

Carry on...

Tooth Extractor, I think YOU'RE the one who thinks Dentistry is "inferior" to medicine. Specter did not, ANYWHERE, say that dentistry was inferior to medicine.

He said that they were DIFFERENT and cannot be compared in the simple way you're trying to compare them. You only perceive him to say that Medicine>Dentistry because you yourself believe it, but are trying to find some self-serving closure that it isn't. Once you reject your insecurity, reread what he said with a more clear mind.

I myself agree with specter. You just can't compare the two. They are completely different. No, Dentistry isn't some "specialty" in medicine. The two require different training and are just DIFFERENT.
