What do you want to learn from the instructors in clinic? Do you want them to show you how they would do a certain procedure or do you want them to leave you the hell alone so you can complete your credits without their over the shoulder scrutiny ?

There is a happy medium between the two you described above. You certainly don't want an instructor that obsesses over details that are only important to him/her while failing to see the "big picture" of restoring a tooth to optimal esthetics and function. On the other hand, when I'm paying more to treat a patient than a patient is paying for their restoration, I would like to learn something- whether it's a trick that will make my life easier or maybe some principle that I've neglected that will make my restorations last longer. Some instructors are happy with whatever you present to them... in these cases, I feel as if I'm flushing my tuition dollars down the toilet.

How important is it that your clinical instructor has practiced in the "real world" as opposed to someone who just has worked in an academic environment?

I want an instructor who will do as little as they need to in order for me to understand the procedure and perform it well. Whether it's standing around on the other side of the bay as I do a simple class 1 prep or actually showing me how to prep a good finish line on the first crown I do.

In other words I don't want an instructor hovering over me during an exam. I also don't want them telling me what to do and walking away when I would benefit more from seeing them do it first.
